Are there any 24/7 news radio stations in Germany?


Most of the Länder have a publicly financed one (e.g MDR Aktuell, HR-info...). These vary in format but tend to operate a 15 or 20 minute newswheel format.

Nationally, there's also Deutschlandfunk which is fairly news-heavy with news every half hour and longer news programmes at key times – a bit like our Radio 4.

And late at night, most of these news stations come together for ARD-Infonacht, a national news service produced at MDR's studios in Halle (even though a few of the stations still have their own regional opt-outs at that time).

Yes, it was SBS6's first foray into international news; that being said, from what I can gather, the stories covered were those deemed to have some relevance to 'the ordinary man or woman'. To use an example from the programme's editor, Boris Yeltsin's heart bypass would be covered, but NATO's expansion to eastern Europe would not. As always with SBS6, Actienieuws' coverage was highly sensationalist, SBS6 being a populist, downmarket channel. (SBS6 even showed soft porn late at night in its early days - remind you of a certain British channel?)

Anyway, as you say, Actienieuws didn't last very long, being axed at the start of 1999. It was revived in 2004, and did very well this time round, regularly attracting over half a million viewers. Ultimately, it proved too expensive to produce, and was again axed in 2006, being replaced with an extra edition of Hart van Nederland, which continues to this day. Clips from this second era are scarce, but I did manage to find a promotion from around 2004 for Actienieuws: (BTW, I really dig the theme tune in that clip)

BTW, I found out the reason for Hart van Nederland only ever having female presenters: the chief editor's reasoning is that "They are familiar faces and recognizable types - they could be your wife, girlfriend or mother."

There are no newscasts on NET 5 I think.

I think you're right - though I think there was one in the station's early days. An interesting fact about SBS6 (and by extension, NET 5) was that when it was set up, the owners didn't want it to be part of the media establishment in Hilversum, so they instead chose to base the channel(s) in Amsterdam. Not too dissimilar to the thinking behind Channel 4's possible move at the moment...

Yes, as I understand it, NET 5 is aimed at 'young, well-educated women', whereas SBS6 is aimed at a broad, family audience (though in the early days, it was aimed at young men, and thus used to show a lot of action films and smut). SBS6 has a large working-class audience, and as such, is often derided as 'the camping channel'.
