I just noticed that around the year 2000, TV4 used a set that was either "inspired" by the BBC or designed by the same people:

For comparison's sake, here is the BBC's Look East from 2002:

From Australia, here is a 1998 promo for Seven News, highlighting that channel's partnerships with overseas broadcasters such as NBC, CNN, Sky News (UK), and Reuters:

And here is an example of a very well-produced local news promo:

This post is so huge that I decided to spoil it to make it look smaller.

Russia 24, the nation's one and only 24-hour news channel (expect RT), slowly renews its presentation, following the overhaul of branding across all VGTRK channels.

This refresh is quite bipolar, varying from 'Russia 24' to old 'Vesti' and, during these months:
- in January, new astons were brought,
- during the Vancouver 2010, ticker was renewed,
- in March, finally we've seen something with the new identity.
- later, the advert sting appeared (for just one time).
- finally, the new TOTH appeared, but strangely branded as 'Vesti'. (sadly, split in two parts: first one and second one).
There were also new astons, as seen in 'No Comments' inset.
- Just after some time, new breakfiller appeared, consisting of news headlines and promos.

So that's how it's now. In comparison...

Vesti was not only a channel...
but also a news programme on Russia 1 , and there are some clips from it:
- 20:00 opener,
- business news inset,
- closer and weather.

For local news...
VGTRK contains of nearly 80 regional television and radio companies, sort-of like ITV... including the quality overall.

So that's how it hands over to local news...
And how it looks, for example, in Moscow... and in Astrakhan regions.

By another comparison...
the full edition of Vesti from 18.10.1995, split into first and second parts, featuring reports from Euronews and CNNi.

hmmmmmm Wink I don't think it's that great! it's kinda stock-standard, unimaginitive, a little on the dull side if you ask me! a long 60 seconds. Smile

Some great clips there, German. I remember reading several years ago that most regional VGTRK stations' news operations were struggling against their commercial competitors, at least in terms of ratings. Is that still the case?

You're probably right, fox1! I'm just a sucker for these oh-so-dramatic promos with high production values.

Here's another news promo that I just loved, but others found way too long:

Mostly yes. For example, in our (Krasnoyarsk) region it gets 2% of average weekly share (other companies get about 4-7% each).
Although there was a full technical reinforcement in the company in September (all GTRKs are going to move into digital TV), the role of local companies is similar to ITV's one: in the UK they're demolished or used as studios, in Russia they're like regional bureaux with rights for opt-out during breakfast TV and after national news.

However, tonight I was going to tell about Channel One news operations. As I told before, I tend to watch their news (along with the Russia 24 thing I told before), and I notice their presentation is now top-of-the-wall (pun intended). Now, they're using not only impressive set, but also the ceiling, as seen here, on the video celebrating 15 years of One: link.

To be continued...
