...is actually a slightly modified version of Frank Gari's Great News Package, which was used by Sky News in 1989 and the early 1990s.

What is it with French TV and those animations that look like they were created by people on LSD? If you don't know what I mean, take a look at TF1's from the late 70's. Interesting still nevertheless.

Any French speakers here?

Was was the rather anxious looks going on as the countdown hit T-4 all about? Was the opener being played off a different telecine player - and no-one told the transmission director?

Indeed. Here's the animation you're probably referring to:

As we recently saw in this thread, this style was even used for the news:

BTW, Antenne 2's closedown (sign off) from this era was the most artistic and strangely touching closedown I have ever seen:

While most of the world uses computer graphics (some superior may use touch screens...) to explain something, Japanese public broadcaster NHK still uses hand-made miniatures.

Above is a clip from NHK's news programme for children, explaining last year's melamine milk disaster. But even the evening news uses miniatures. (In the case of the clip below, North Korean nuclear reactors.)

By the way, is there no Japanese-born TV presentation freaks living in Japan? Except for anime, few of news intros were found. (Clips above? Were recorded by Koreans, from NHK World "Premium".)

Two different signed bulletins from Finland and Japan.

Arrow http://areena.yle.fi/hae?pid=169382
The YLE bulletin, was a separated programme, is now a part of the news at six on TV 1. Main presenter also gives audio description to those signs since then. (I like the idea to get more attentions.)

Arrow http://tvpot.daum.net/clip/ClipView.do?clipid=12004967

The NHK bulletin (calls itself a signed news but seems also for hard of seeing.) is broadcast on Educational TV (rather than General TV). Although graphic looks somewhat ..., the content seems more detailed than those of YLE.

An interesting compilation showing the evolution of the news on France's TF1 and the various styles of presentation used over the years (up to the 1990s):
