100% agree with that music being terrifying. One thing that absolutely chills me to my soul even more than any horror film I've ever seen is the Diana death newsflashes. That one with the female continuity announcer is soul destroying. I'm getting goosebumps just thinking about it. Shocked Laughing

I don't get the dislike of the pre-97 BBC video ident, perfectly pleasant tune and animation. The replacement wasn't as good.

But yep I know the Diana announcement you mean, it is quite unsettling. It's the stiltedness and uncertainty in her voice but also the rustles in the background. A lot of the Diana stuff is a bit chilling, it's the very formal 'regular programming has been suspended' type announcements that are what we long expected to be used for something a lot more frightening

For me, it wasn't the music, (I actually quite liked it), but the BBC corporate logo: that ugly Helvetica typeface on grey parallelograms and RGB lines underneath just screams 1986, it's too on-the-nose...

They've got to bring back the balloon. Something that is truly isolated from everything else yet still feels like it brings everyone together.

It's a package from 18 years ago, not in HD. Just not going to happen. They've don't have to travel that far back to find some perfectly appropriate (and entertaining) idents.

I've been thinking about this a bit more and I don't want to use the word "inappropriate" for why they're still shown, because that implies someone is going to see those cyclists together and suddenly believe they can go out on a group bike ride. Which of course level-headed people just wouldn't do. I guess maybe "dumb" is a better word? It's just dumb that a broadcaster trying so hard to reflect the mood of a nation and do its public service is still showing them. The announcers are subtly acknowledging the current situation, yet what is being shown on screen at the same time is daft!

Still, Forest is at least getting used into and out of the PIFs.

To be honest if BBC One spontaneously decided to revive an old package I'd argue most of the circle idents would be the best choice, and in any event those were on air for the best part of a decade, and it wasn't a bad package at all.

But do the cirles idents show people social distancing, which seems to be this week's excuse for why people want Oneness scrapped? Razz

To be perfectly honest some people will never be happy until they see the return of Circles, the COW or the Bat wings (delete as appropriate) between their programmes.

A lot of them don't show people at all.

If we're going to be pedantic about social distancing on the Beeb, perhaps we could have a white BBC1 logo on a black background. Quick, cheap and no-ones within 2m of each other! Sorted.

(also maybe we could get the original countdown sequence back on NC? Some scense have people much too close to each other Wink)

** Smile

(if a mod could reduce the size of the image with the BBCode because I don't know how to do it on here. Many thanks)

That would be appropriate.

The figures on the kites ident certainly appear to be more than two metres apart (the 2009 re-edit handily cuts out the shots where people are seen to be closer together).

I know this might seem like a stupid question, but was that logo completely CG or part physical model?

I’ve always assumed it to be CG but over the years always find myself surprised when it turns out not to be the case!
