So the hippos didn't survive the great celebrity cull of 2016. As others have posted a new ident set will debut on New Years Day, and Oneness is here to stay. Here's an example of a trailer frontcap and endcap from a clip of Taboo:

I'm keeping my expectations in check, in case it's going to be great or poor.
As for Oneness - however tacky it may feel, it's suiting itself as a decent slogan for BBC ONE.
While the circles proved to be a good pres package - it aged to bits. If they're really going, I'll miss seeing the hippos going round in circles and the cape idents' lovely soundtrack (2009 version). It's proven to signify itself as a strong brand for ONE.
I'd also love for BBC TWO to have a pres package that looks up to the excellent 90s idents, but envisions it in a modern take, with a balance of wit and seriousness (aka what the last two pres packages had too much of one of them).
I really hope 2017 will see new BBC One idents. Ten years of one presentation package must be a record for a British channel. If they copy the Christmas look of idents with real people in them, it will just be a rip off of ITV 2013 package.
The 2006 idents has definitely lasted well for something that was meant to last for 4-5 years, I don't feel 'Oneness' will be disappointing if its anything from what I saw on Christmas Day.

Four years would have been way too short for my liking. The cutoff point in my opinion, would be at least 6-7 years, but with DQF and Charter Renewal, the circles were ensured some level of survival.

BBC TWO's 90s idents and Channel 4's previous pres package of 2004 can be lumped up here.
