I wonder why, and how, Red Bee don't have any presence at Medja City?

Never heard this before... Continuity announcements being done from Media City instead of London according to tonight’s BBC One announcer https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=99FppzRu9oU

Do what!

I wonder why, and how, Red Bee don't have any presence at Medja City?

turns out they do.

I think some facilities have been dual-sited since the new Playout 1 went online - I didn't realise that included any operations though, and I'm not sure what it means for the previous (just outside London) DR facility.

[Edit] pipped to the post, and this early in the morning...!

Well, there you go! (Aren't they going to need the same in Leeds soon?)

I'm sure I heard talk of them moving what's in Leeds to Salford, I don't know what came of that

It sounds like playout was still in London, with announcements from Salford. Which is odd.

It's been done that way round, the opposite way round, all from Salford and all from London. Works well enough that nobody's noticed until it was mentioned on air.

I'm not sure what it means for the previous (just outside London) DR facility.

That's no longer in use, not sure anyone misses it (was quite a lonely shift, I believe!)

So is playout now permanently a split-site operation or were they just testing DR arrangements?

I suspect the latter .....
just as Birmingham with a good cricket match was .

When was that?

I know pre 2004/5 Birmingham held this role, and the annual testing was sketchy at best. As deejay once explained when Birmingham handled the deferred facilities role it was simply replugged edit suites and galleries controlling various things. I assume Salford will have dedicated facilities to run a channel built for that purpose rather than some VT bays replugged to output programming. Plus everything is server based now so far easier to do than the old arrangements of tapes straight up the A/M40.

It probably depends on whether the test is of the ability for production to operate out of Birmingham or testing the switching that allows Birmingham to originate the network.

If the test match was coming from Edgbaston it would be going through Pebble Mill Comms Centre to get to TV Centre, so convenient to test then with no need for additional circuits to get the London output to Birmingham.

Maybe just need somebody in the Birmingham pres studio with suitable captions and music to be able to cover the cricket OB falling off air while pres in London is out of circuit.

See Blakes post above and that should give you a clue:

Incidently I wonder if it was supposed to be mentioned on air?
