GMTV (1993 - 2010)

Hear hear, its even more pointless at weekends nowadays, considering from 9.25am they show nothing but repeats, bit pathetic really. It should have been brought forward to 9.30 in 1987 when Schools programmes on ITV ended, it's a bit daft still having it in 2010.

I'm amazed it's taken until 2010 for ITV to take full control of GMTV, a breakfast franchise made sense in the days of 4 channel TV, but now with many hundreds it just seems pointless and high costs on both parties.

The 09:25 finish dates from the days of ITV regional start ups, something else long since gone. Basically, the ITV companies would commence broadcasting at 09:30. But had to do a formal startup to satisfy the IBA (a few examples exist on youtube), hence the startup was 09:25. With no startups, perhaps moving the end of GMTV to 09:30 could be explored. Thing is, will STV and/or UTV be happy?

that's the problem - even though ITV own GMTV, they don't own past 9:25 in STV & UTV regions, so would need the breakfast licence moving or have an agreement with STV/UTV.

I could be nostalgic, but there's part of me that likes the 9:25 finish time.
But that could be to do with memories of programmes, especially Saturday morning ones starting at 9:25.

Which shouldn't be a problem as there's never been an ad break in that 5 minutes and it's long been a networked programme that follows

Doesn't the awkward end time date back to the days when the ITV regions had to be switched on manually at the transmitter, rather than because they had to run start up sequences?

That's really funny.

I'm thinking still that "Daybreak" is going to be on at weekends also, maybe Kate Garraway will be cover presenter for Christine but otherwise working Saturday and Sunday. The thing is, if they are trying to compete with BBC Breakfast and Sky Sunrise, both shown on weekends, why give viewers the opportunity to watch the other shows on the weekend, get to like them, and then not switch back on a Monday morning.

Exactly - it doesn't really matter and unless something changes in the ITV schedule, there is no need to change it as it would screw the rest of their morning schedule up.

Isn't "ITV at Breakfast" the front runner now? Sounds alright to me, even if its similar to 'BBC News' Breakfast.
