Managed to get a sneak listen to the new theme yesterday, and IMO it sounds great.

It still retains the familiar Calendar tune (hooray!), but it's a much beefier arrangement than the nasty tinny one we have at the moment. The style put me in mind of the Central News theme - sounded 'big' if you know what I mean. Very Happy

I'm glad about that! I was more worried about losing that familiar music than anything else!

Yes and I like the sound of it sounding 'big'!

Is it a record for the same music being used since approx 1982? I know there've been lots of different arrangements, but it's essentially the same music.

Well let me think, all the BBC can be ruled out obviously, many ITV1 regions didn't even exist in 1982 so that takes out Meridian etc and Granada and ITV News have changed a few times so I think it's definally the longest running news music

A YTV start-up from the 80's, with the extended version of that music (from TV-Ark)

Anyone got a clean copy?

What about Channel 4 news, was that the same in 1982. Of course it depends when in 1982 Calendar started using the theme, If it was before November then it'll be older.

I've seen at least the first edition of C4N and it uses different music. I'm not sure how long it took for them to change it to the theme we're all used to.

AFAIK YTV started using the theme very much like the Calendar music as their start-up on 1 January 1982, how long it took Calendar to use this theme I don't really know. Shame, as I can remember watching Calendar with them theme they used before that.

Whoa; classic 80's stuff! It would be good if some of the extended, unheard (well, for twenty years at least), parts of the theme could make it to air (obviously in a more modern arrangement). Maybe no pan pipes!!

Talking about extended music there was a thread in Requests a while back requesting the full music of the current Calendar theme, It may have been Ashley or Nicky who started the thread I'm not sure, anyhow it didn't get very far

Maybe now the music is going to be defunct there is more chance of it being leaked into the net..?

LOL Andrew it was me who started the thread about the theme. That harrisn guy wouldn't let us listen: "I've promised not to lend it..." and all that. Shame....

I will also miss Geoff Druett on Calendar, he was great. Hopefully we'll see him on some YTV regional documentaries!

To clear a few things up, the Calendar theme was originally penned circa 1980. It was reformed for 1982 when the new franchise began (when it became Yorkshire Television Limited rather than Trident Television Limited) and has had several refurbs since. For personal taste, I like the summer 1986 look (Orange blue etc.) and the 1989 purple, green and gold era. If you look on Tv Ark, you'll see the Calendar promo that I provided for them, it's excellent - trust me.

The cube era of 1992/3 wasn't bad either, but the current crop of titles hasn't cut the mustard (present titles aren't bad however - the previous chevron version was pants!) I'm looking forward to the new titles, the red-orange looks impressive.

As for Andrew's question on Calendar South, YTV still does have a studio here in Sheffield ( Charter Square, beside the Grosvenor House Hotel to be precise) however it isn't used for full programmes anymore. Calendar South used to be broadcast in full every Friday in the early nineties from Sheffield (with Alan Hardwicke or Chris Kiddey amongst others), but these days it's used mainly for interviews. Any interviews with David Blunkett on national news from Sheffield are recorded here. The rest of 'South' news comes from a Leeds broom Cupboard the same as 'East'. The Hull office is still in situ, but the YTV shop has gone (in 1988 you could buy Zippy and Catchphrase board games from it!)

If you're interested, you can look through the windows at what is going on ( I drive past it every day, and sometimes you can see what is going on when the blinds are drawn).

I don't think Geoff will be doing any more Calendar. He's been with YTV since 1977 when Austin Mitchell departed, and before that he use to work for Anglia, so he must be due for retirement soon. I'd expext to see John Shires co-presenting in future.

As for 'new look' potsers, they're all over the City, I've seen at least 30 on my travels. Is it me or does Duncan Wood look like Matthew Wright on the poster?

For those of you interested, i've got a picture of the Sheffield studio when first opened. If I can get the scanner to work, I will see if I can post a picture of it.

Better still, come and visit our great City Very Happy

So when did Calendar South bulletins stop coming from Sheffield, also have they got an endless supply of broomcupboards in Leeds or something!
Now I know why the likes of Nicola Crompton sometimes do odd days on South, there was me thinking she travelled up and down the M1

Is that Sheffield or Hull you are talking about, when I go past YTV in Sheffield it just seems to be a grubby building with token pictures of Christine Talbot, At Home with the Braithwaites and Countdown in the window!

Well I went into Leeds today and I only half saw one in Bramley but it was facing the wrong way to the way I was going. They don't seem to be as common as the "Harry and Christa are spending the evening together" ones that the BBC did

Oh by the way today's Calendar News and Sport was presented by Paul Burland on the soft set. Probably because Jason McCartney is in Cardiff covering the football for Goals on Sunday, tommorow at 2pm which is a change to the advertised schedule in some listings

And talking about the new look, as YTV insist on not having an ident at 6pm (and who can blame them remember the dull and lifeless announcements "Watching Yorkshire on ITV1 with tonight's Calendar"), another thing I'd like to see is some sort of Border style frontcap ident or Meridian style booming voice or something at the start of the all new Calendar

I'm talking about the Sheffield newsroom. You need to be looking through the window facing Debenhams and look towards the back of the room. Calendar South stopped broadcasting real editions in1993 when we went to the cube look. I have the first edition on video, but obviously due to the rarity of this, i'm not able to lend it out.

Alan Hardwicke used to live in Sheffield, and he use to catch the bus home after his shift (this I know being a bus driver - I work for First, aren't they just the most dire firm in the world!) so he's a genuine man of the people. It was a shame when he went to Lincoln.

As for the posters, we didn't seem to get very many 'Christa' posters in Sheffield. Personally, I find her arrogant and very over-rated. She snears at Harry. I've got a YTV hand book from 1990 and she is described as a 'talented radio presenter'. I think she use to present on Radio Aire or BBC radio Leeds. She replaced Marilyn Webb and Jane Beckwith (not bad, two wages saved in one go!)

Now, if I can get this bloody upload to work, i'll give you a picture of the Sheffield newsroom in 1968 (in and out). Look out for Austin Mitchell in the 'blue' photo, and count how many staff are needed for a broadcast!

Christa was the Programme Director at Aire, I'm not sure what the timings were but she may well have been Peter Levy's boss!
