The Working Time Regulations (1998) would be the ruling in question. That has two points of interest to this discussion:

  • There are exclusions for certain industries, TV is one of them.
  • An employee can agree with their employer to waive certain of their rights under the regulations

So yeah, what bazinga says - it's a matter for the individual and their employer. Working funny hours is pretty much part of the territory in the media.

And split shifts aren't uncommon in the real world too - or indeed a full shift from morning to night. I'd be much more concerned about a doctor working at 6am in the morning and 10pm the same night than a newsreader.

Ranvir has arguably been one of the main beneficiaries from the axing of Daybreak - she's in a much higher profile position than she was six months ago and I suspect doing the odd day where she does GMB and NAT is probably less of an issue than having to be up at 3/4am every day to be on air at 6am.

This is quite unusual. Penny Marshall, who was going to be the BBC's Education Editor, is in fact returning to ITV News before even starting at the BBC. I've never heard of anything like this happening before!

Will return as Social Affairs Editor.

It's a slightly unusual case, since she's been ill. Serious illness makes you reassess things. Maybe she just wanted to stay where she was comfortable and felt at home.

I think this should be left alone.

There have been examples of this before. Tim Ewart was one of GMTV's first signings, but during 1992, he didn't like the way things were going regarding their plans so he decided to rejoin ITN before GMTV were even on air. Not sure if he even got as far as doing pilots, or even leaving ITN.

Funnily enough Tim is Penny's husband, according to the Daily Mail

I'd imagine working for BBC News is quite a different beast to ITV News just as switching from a fairly small company to a much larger multi-national would be.

Just before you post in this thread it says "Posts should not relate to presenter's personal life". It's not like it's offensive or anything, it just adds nothing of any value to the discussion. I really don't care that she happens to be married to someone I see on the telly sometimes. Rolling Eyes

I wonder will ITN bother to fill the vacant position of Africa Correspondent.

Of course Tim later had a longer spell at the BBC himself - fronting Newsroom South East - before coming back to ITN (again).

Indeed he did, here's a full bulletin with Tim from 1996...
