New BBC Singapore studio

Since the demise of plasma we've been a bit stuffed for in-vision monitors in TV studios...


The screens specifically are Samsung QM85Ds, so yes LED backlit LCDs (commonly known as "LEDs"). The shot of Rico above is a publicity shot, and none of the cameras will be in that position so that specific reflection won't happen.

There are still minor issues like reflections, balancing screens etc - for example one of the loops has a black frame every 30 seconds. These will obviously be fixed in the next week, but they're pretty far down the list of "things to do".

As for the difference in screens: I checked the settings this morning mindful of this thread, and the catwalk TVs are set up identically, however there are noticable differences especially on 2+3 and I'm pushing the camera/lighting chaps to fix it. These screens are used in W1 somewhere (I forget where). The massive difference in colour between the set seems to be more reflection than angles though.

That said, if anyone remembers the Barco screens from TVC, matching colours has never been a high priority for the BBC.

I believe the same screens are used in Studio C, opposite side from the catwalk...maybe.

Yep - publicity stills are annoyingly often taken in places and simulating shots that won't be used on-air and thus don't show the studio and presenter off to their best.

Be interesting to see how they perform off-axis. Last time I looked at Samsung LCDs (LED backlit) they still changed saturation and colour-cast off-axis far worse than plasmas. Fine if you shoot a single monitor front-on - say for a down-the-line screen, but not great for a set where you track or shoot multiple screens at different angles, and not always from the same position.

LCDs usually need a colour corrector in circuit as well - whereas you can usually get a plasma looking very good on-camera without any external processing. (LCDs are often a little bit too blue...)

I think it would be fairer to say "for BBC News".

Other bits of the BBC quite often manage to get their screens - and cameras - to match...

So, from the 3rd of August the BBC will have a nice new studio in Singapore after being in a cupboard for so many years, and they also say they're relaunching 'Asia Business Report' and 'Newsday' on this date too. On Newsday they've been previewing the new offices each today, and today they showed off some more of the studio:

The accompanying speech made by Rico also joked about the old studio being more 'compact', with the presenter always sitting down. I'm sure some members will be thrilled to hear that the new studio allows for lots of nice standing up on the Singapore catwalk of news. As they're relaunching Newsday I'm also hoping for some new music to go with the new graphics - after all David Lowe has done a fair number of new sets of music for the BBC this year!

I think because this is a big topic that should be in it's own space and so people interested in the new studio don't have to sort through multiple discussions if they want to see how the set is progressing.

I really like the new graphics. Anyword what's powering them on the video wall?

Here's a preview of thee new look for Newsday from London - I did wonder why the lightboxes above and below the screens in the new Singapore studio were a light blue. Not sure about the colour combination but the new London view looks very nice.

SDI into blackmagic SDI-HDMI converters. The SDI comes in off 4 auxes on the Ross vision mixer.

The graphics themselves are video loops played out via ffmbc, Ubuntu linux and blackmagic drivers using some in-house software, which has played out ABR for years.
