New BBC Singapore studio

I thought that splitting it from the main thread might be nice... (July 2015)

Can anyone give any detail on whether the monitor behind the desk (Studio C) that displays the skyline backdrop, is able to be used as a news wall (like how it is done in Studio B for Impact)? I think I've read somewhere that the said monitor is a much lower grade monitor and historically I've never seen it used for any news graphics other than as a backdrop theme.

I think that screen is a diffused LED matrix display (not an LED-backlit LCD display), which is quite coarse pitch and thus low resolution and whilst suitable for image-based backdrops (that should look a little out of focus), it isn't designed for presentation graphics that need to carry text content. It's designed to function in a similar manner to the window out onto the Newsroom that Studio E has (and is why they feed it with a newsroom backdrop when News Channel programmes are in there)

It's similar technology to the screen in B that provides the backdrop for The Andrew Marr Show I believe.

The studio C backdrop and Studio B soft section backdrop are both Toshiba 6mm LED Panels, obviously in a different configuration. More can be found out at the suppliers website...

This is how the image is with safe areas and underscan shown, here's how it would look on an older 4:3 set (lots of hotels around the world show BBC World News and still have 4:3 systems.

Thanks Bail, I knew it wasn't just me being picky!

I know they sometimes use graphic bullet points overlaid on the left, but that's maybe only around half of the time this shot is used.

In addition, It often appears just as they come out of a news-in-brief/"coming up" sequence of pictures, so it jars badly as you've typically been watching action in the middle of the screen - then suddenly you're looking at blank skyline and have to move your eyes to the right.

I know how pathetic that last point sounds (poor me, having to move my eyes!) but the main thing is it looks rubbish.

Perhaps they should try getting the Singapore presenter to stand on the left of camera and try a full screen split screen.

Yes I do like that idea.

If they do that they better make sure it's still 14:9 safe. For some reason the SD feed they provide here in North America is a 14:9 frame letter boxed in a 4:3 frame. Some text has been starting to get cut off - particularly the content that has no voice over that probably was designed for the web.

Same in India. Some 4:3 outlets are carrying BBC World News 14:9 letterbox, and the graphics-filled packages with no VO are badly cropped there as well.

BBC domestic outlets are now 16:9 graphics safe only, but BBC World News still goes out 14:9 letterboxed in a number of regions. Not sure the message has got back to London - particularly as those packages are BBC World News only commissions...

Extremely hazy Singapore skyline today. I wonder why they didn't switch to catwalk.

Because the hazy skyline is actually one of the stories they are covering, Rico even showed how he needs a filter mask to get to work.

The outside is the story so looking out of the window makes sense. It seems that Kasia Maderia did the interview with Rico in Singapore and there were the graphics that they have now for the split screen views.
