Did anyone spot the "image of an offensive word" broadcast on yesterday's News at Ten? It was on screen for 2 seconds and James Mates apologised for it this afternoon. I didn't spot it, but once I found the recording, slowed it down, zoomed in and watched it back a few times, I was most certainly offended. Here is the video so you can be offended too...

and just in case you are not offended by that, here it is in more detail...

EDIT: Oh. I suppose I'd better make this post presentation related in some way. Let me just say something about it probably being someone watching on upscaled ITV1 HD that spotted this as it was difficult enough to see on SD even when I knew it was there. Something else for broadcasters to look out for now HD is becoming the norm.

Yes, you could tell the results were still being processed but I guess the rest of the details they didn't manage to read out last night will be pretty prominent tonight at ten. Good to read that News at Ten won six million viewers last night as well, against the BBC's four million.

And as for today, well, old practices die hard don't they. James Mates on the News at 1:30: "Well, live now to our science editor Lawrence McGinty who's on the roof of ITN headquarters this lunchtime..." Laughing

I thought they grown out of plonking reporters on the roof when having them in the studio could suffice...

Was it about the ash? In that case I reckon they can just get away with it because you can see the sky I suppose Laughing

Otherwise it just gets silly when they do that!

But the had Chris Choi in the studio immediately afterwards, so it may be that they had to put one of them somewhere, and given the story is happening 'up there' the roof doesn't seem unreasonable.

I really love it when ITV News anchor on-location. Especially the evening news gets some great images. I know obviously they have all day to set up unlike Sky and the BBC who are rolling news channels but I think it shows ITV News at its best.

I remember one story last year, probably the G20 summit, we had Mary stood on the gardens outside Buckingham Palace (on a box because of her height bless her Laughing ) but the output was great, especially with the sunset.

I know I said it shows ITV News at its best and I suppose it could be argued that when they move out of the studio they only do it for big stories and therefore they have more to show off but nevertheless they do a good job.

Plus we get to see those Opening and Closing shots of the crew that we all love Laughing

Like this from last nights BBC News at Ten....

News at Ten got one of it's highest figures yesterday, of the back of the debates, beating BBC NAT.
Some different figures quoted, but 6.8m for News at Ten apparently, although that might be the peak as it's reported on Media Guardian for News at Ten being 6m, compared to 4.1m for BBC News.

I have enjoyed seeing mark on the evening news this week, and I have liked how they chose to sit on the left for 6;30 today and 10 yesterday.

Not seen much of geraint and the wives, and haven't seen romilly for ages. I do still think geraint and Nina should return to our screens as a pair on Friday evening.

Would be nice, although my favourite pairing is now Mark and Julie or Mark and Katie who is on right now much to my liking Very Happy

Yes, I did think Mark and Katie were very good today.

It's clear that ITV News now (quite rightly in my opinion) consider Friday to be as important as Monday to Thursday so are positioning it as part of the weekday schedule rather than the weekend one.

That's why I guess no Nina and Geraint, well Geraint at least.
I'm all for Geraint but tbh he always seemed edgy and nervous when presenting and Geraint's skill is in reporting IMO

Steve Scott seems back in favour over Geraint Vincent, though James Mates seems to be first choice stand-in outside the main five. Has Geraint even presented a bulletin since the new look?
