Does anybody know when the early Christmas TV Guides will be released in the newspapers. I think it may be the end of this week or the week after, but I'm not sure.
I think DigiGuide are also releasing the full terrestrial Christmas listings within in the next 3 weeks.

You didn't hear this from me but...

Over the next two weeks my colleagues and I will be compiling the Christmas listings for TV Times, What's on TV and TV & Satellite Week.

Whether our listings will be full of TBAs, who knows.

I predict, based on what has happened in previous years, that the christmas Radio Times and other listings magazines will be out on Tuesday 7th December. Although this year, just as in 1999 it'll run out on New Year's Eve. Maybe they should do the first ever triple issue or change the weeks so that they don't start on Saturdays!

The listings in the papers, who knows, but who really cares as they are normally a complete load of rubbish. It's either all TBAs, stuff being assumed or all shows that end up on different days!

The double editions for the TV Guide (or as we call them, Week 52/53) will apply for the period 18th December to 31st December - then the next edition (Week 1) will cover 1st-7th January.

Triple issue? Do you want us poor cretins who put together the TV listings for magazines to work ourselves into early graves for the next two weeks?!? We have to do the previous week's listings as well as the double Christmas editions for four different magazines in the space of 11 days!!! Mad

Well I hope they are going to put Corrie on the cover of the Xmas Double issues as Karen/Suranne is leaving!

When will the tv guides start coming out early? Is it next Saturday we will get the issue for 4th-10th December? Then the following Saturday we will get the issues for 11th-17th December, then the double issue on the Tuesday after that?

Can't confirm what the Christmas magazine covers will be yet Jez, all I know is for Week 50 (4th-10th Dec, due out Tuesday 30th November):

Arrow TV Times will have a Corrie cover (not specified which characters yet)
Arrow What's On TV: TBC
Arrow TV & Satellite Week: X-Men 2 ('cos we like to be different Smile)

I say Tuesday, as I know that's when TVSW comes out, dates might vary for TVT & WOT.

OK, had a sneak peek at the provisional listings... only satellite in so far and I can't really trust the listings as they are still liable to change.

All I'll say for now is there looks like a major UK TV premiere on Christmas evening on Sky Movies 1 Wink

Cheers for the info Col, I hope they do have a Corrie cover this Xmas on the tv guides because it will be the last chance to give Suranne a cover. However I know some of the tv guides tend to have festive covers with Christmas Trees and snow etc.

I saw some of the listings for December for the Sky/digital channels in the TV Monthly magazine which is on sale now.

Are all the news wholesalers fully clued up on the fact that there's a week 53 this year?

I seem to remember that the last time it happened, Surridge Dawson, as they were then called, missed the plot completely and had to have a dummy week zero at the end of the following January to get back in step with the rest of the industry.

I don't think so Nick, I guess it's PA style to indicate the last week of the year (including any days after New Year's Eve) as Week 53, with Week 1 being the first full week of the new year. I wasn't here last Christmas, who knows about next Christmas so I'm just going along with what they say Smile

Conveniently, as New Year's Day falls on a Saturday, and our weeks begin from Saturday onwards, we have both a full Week 53 and a full Week 1.

As long as we complete the TV listings and send them off to the contractors on time, that's all that matters.

Wholesaler weeks start on a Monday, Col, so 2005/01 will start on January 3rd. That means that 2004 WILL have a week 53 and confusion COULD arise.

Whether this will add to or clear up the confusion is up to you, but here goes:

The PA is only responsible for the TV listings as published in TV Times, What's On TV, TV & Satellite Week, Teletext, most Sunday newspaper magazines etc., we are simply contracted to provide the listings using our information - the other content in all the magazines we produce; articles, advertisements etc. is inserted by the publishers and produced by their own staff (unless they take features from PA or other providers).

So I don't know much about what happens to the magazine once they are printed and ready for distribution - we get the printed copies of new magazines on the Tuesday at the same time as retailers or their distributors receive them, and they come to us in batches (usually seven copies of each of the regional variations for each magazine).

I think the product code and week of issue are printed on the cover, as I imagine they are on the batches sent to retailers.

But, because our magazine copies stay internal (well, most of them - I take the Yorks/North East TVSW home with me Wink), the batches which are distributed for public retail could be labelled differently, I have never seen such batches.

We are given style sheets each week outlining the page layout for each page in each magazine, and at the top it lists the week number and the dates which the magazine will feature listings for.

Usually, PA provides the listings to the department I work for (IPC Media) two weeks in advance (ie. we produce the page spreads for the TV guides for the magazine published and released the following week, which lists forthcoming schedules for the following week), but for the past month we have been "pulling up" to prepare for producing the Christmas double week listings.

From tomorrow onwards, my colleagues and I will start producing the listings for Week 51 (11th-17th December), with the view to start work on the double Christmas edition (Weeks 52/53, aka 18th-31st December) by next weekend.

The policy of naming weeks is the duty of our provider (IPC Media), so it's their responsibility to ensure their staff, the staff who work for them here at PA in Howden, and their distribution staff hopefully universally know which week they are working on. I didn't want to put a disclaimer in but any confusion arising from which week is which is not the fault of IPC Media, the PA or anyone associated with the production of the TV guides magazines.

The reason why we are working so far in advance is that we hope to produce the Christmas listings, and at least the first three weeks of listings for 2005 (Week 1: 1st-7th January; Week 2: 8th-14th January and Week 3: 15th-21st January) by 23rd December and all the staff in my department can have all of Christmas and New Year off (and I can get back to Northern Ireland to spend the holidays my family!)

Hope that explains things, if a bit long-winded Smile
