Because both those programmes are simulcasts with BBC World News and they are not running a weekend schedule until tomorrow.

Surely, it would make sense for both channels to switch to weekend schedule on the same day. Also BBC One is running a normal News at Ten.

I think it would have made sense for both channels to switch to a weekend schedule together from today but perhaps BBC World News bosses feel that international audiences would still expect a full schedule today. It is odd that there is a full length News at Ten but a holiday length early evening news on BBC 1 today.

They were used for the break filler on BBC World too. The disc played the backgrounds and the text was got from the channels teletext page and added live.

I remember those panels in the transmission suites, but never saw them used in anger. By the time I started everything between programmes was coming off server. The device did still work but the discs had got dirty and so some broke up or froze when played.

I assume the panel was just used to cue up the correct version, which was then played by the automation at the right moment

Did the BBC World channel idents, countdowns, weather ident etc. come off LaserDisc as well at that time (i.e. about 2000-2003)? Or was it just the break filler and the rest was on a server?

I don't think LaserDisc (the Philips/Pioneer composite domestic format was used) - they were likely to be Sony CRV Component Recordable Video (which used a caddy to store a Write Once Read Many analogue component video disc)

CRVs were certainly what BBC One and BBC Two idents and the Fill (and for some looks the Key on a separate disc) for the BBC News titles from the mid-90s to the early 00s.

CRVs were a significantly higher quality than LaserDisc.

I think the rest were on server/tape, the disc was just for the break filler

It was retired when the channel rebranded in 2000/2001 either because there was no room on the disc or because there was no where left that could write it to the disc

Interesting that ITV have still got full length National and regional bulletins tonight, but the BBC have gone into holiday mode with half length bulletins.

VERY old - pre-globe! Was that guy using it as his desktop wallpaper or something?

BBC News didn't seem able to get a decent quality copy of the Gavin & Stacey special for the report on its ratings success.

I’ve been meaning to ask is the gallery for E right behind them on the left or on the right?

Also with the Queen’s Christmas Message does one broadcaster (the one who filmed it air it) or do all? And how is it distributed where everyone gets a cut and expected to playout at the same time or is it fed from the one who recorded live. Finally does the Queen do different messages for Australia and Canada for instance or are they all pretty generic / focused on Britain?

In answer to your first question yes it's behind them on the right of the screen.

Something odd occurring this morning... Wasn't 'The Briefing' laid to rest?

The 5am bulletin began with Mike Embley welcoming PBS viewers as well as UK and World..... and then then this popped up in the second half hour.
