How popular is NY1 in New York. Is it more popular than national news networks?

Only going off the feeling I got and with no awareness of actual numbers, but WNBC felt like the main one, I didn’t really see or hear much of NY1 the times I’ve been there.

Per their advertising page, ( http://www.ny1.com/nyc/all-boroughs/about-us/advertising-info ) they claim a reach of 750,000 viewers, along with more than 10,500 corporate offices, 1,900 restaurants and bars, 60,000 hotel rooms, and thousands of other retail locations across the five boroughs.

In a market with over 30 local television stations, and hundreds of cable outlets, I'd say that's a very decent performance.

NY1 has over the years have become a bit of a local institution, due to in large part NY1 and their presenters appearing in television and movies. NY1's popularity led to the founding of their Spanish language service, NY1 Noticias in 2003.
Also, Some NY1 presenters have a respectable following such as morning anchor Pat Kiernan for his "In The Papers" segment, afternoon presenter Roma Torre for her time presenting the theatre programme "On Stage", among others. The NY1 name itself is respected among New Yorkers to the point where when NY1's corporate owners Time Warner Cable (which was spun off from Time Warner, CNN's parent company) were streamlining their regional channels to the singular name of "Time Warner Cable News", viewers protested the name change which led to a compromise: "Time Warner Cable News NY1" & "Time Warner Cable NY1 Noticias", with their on-air names still being NY1 & NY1 Noticias. (Time Warner Cable merged with Charter Communication and would become Spectrum News NY1 / NY1 Noticias)

The reason WNBC felt like that was due to two popular rebrandings: News 4 New York (1980-1995 & 2008 to present) and News Channel 4 (1995-2008), which were successful in branding themselves as "New York's News Station" & "Tri-state area's News Leader". WNBC also were famous for the introduction of the popular local show Live At Five, the first successful 5pm newscast and the acclaimed "We're 4 New York" branding (1992-1995 & 2008-12) among others.

Ratings wise I think WABC has had a fairly huge lead over the other outlets for the past 25 years. I'm more of a WNBC viewer probably because of how well integrated their news product is with the rest of NBC and 30 Rock, but WABC is certainly the ratings magnet here in New York.

WABC on the other hand has a more distinctive identity compared to ABC proper, likely since they have an "ain't broke, don't fix it" mentality. That's not to say they're not incredibly well resourced with new broadcasting technologies, but the feel and format of Eyewitness News has remained largely the same for 20 years.

Regarding NY1, it's only available to Spectrum and Optimum subscribers, so it doesn't reach OTA, Verizon, and Satellite viewers. I've never had access to it, but when I have viewed it it seems really stale, formal, and beholden to the wheel format.

Just to clarify about NY1 carriage deals. They are no longer just a Spectrum (previously TimeWarner) only service. its on available on Spectum, Optiumum and Charter. Verizon Fios wont carry it because they have their own news channels for the NY area. Satellite providers are particularly notorious about carry certain local cable channels.

NY1 is also used more frequently in movies and TV shows than other stations. There was an article somewhere about Pat Kiernan appearing in movies and TV shows. NY1 is even occasionally used when a production company owned by the network rather than their own stations.

I don’t feel like bumping a two year old thread for something trivial and as CNBC Europe comes under the NBCUniversal News Group banner I figure this will fit here as well.

I’ve noticed that CNBC’s US simulcast of Street Signs appears to have gone HD. The picture isn’t as crisp typical HD programming but none the less it appears the cameras and graphics have been upgraded before. Before we were getting 16:9 SD.

I’m not sure what’s causing the crispness to be gone but it appears to me that the lighting in the studio atleast needs to be upgraded.

Edit : Turns out CNBC was moved out of the NBCUni News Group in 2015 and reports directly to the NBCU CEO. Still it might as well be a division of NBC News as they use its reporters, resources, and offices.

Good Morning America is to expand into a third hour - in the afternoon.

How does this work? Are they on 7am until 9am ET at the moment, then going off air for 4 hours and back on at 1pm?

I know they're tape delayed the further west you go, but I can never get my head around the timings for some reason.
