It was over two weeks ago. I'm surprised he was reading the SF, I thought that's always the task for the R4 duty announcer ?

Not at 5:20am. For whatever reason that's been the job of the weather forecaster for a few years now.

Well he can't claim he didn't know if he was on air or not before making a hasty retreat this time. Laughing

Get well soon TS.

I think it's because (at least when the news stuff came from TV Centre) there is/was only one newsreader on shift early doors rather than an announcer and newsreader.

Yup, that's still the case. Fairly certain the announcer/newsreader used to do it while this was the case but not 100% sure

Did any other BBC regions struggle with the 'Christmas Eve' and 'Christmas Day' captions that appear in the bottom right corner next to the time of day in their forecasts during the 6:30 programme tonight? Look East had the standard rectangular blue box with the day in, and the time next to it in a black box until 00:00 Christmas Eve, upon which the box the 'Christmas Eve' caption was contained in switched to the red rounded rectangle box that appeared on forecasts up until the move to Broadcasting House. The old style also appeared on the Christmas Day chart, before switching back to normal for the outlook. Slightly strange error, you wouldn't think they'd have the old style in the system still!

I noticed that Look North in the land of Levy used a pre-2013 style template for the Christmas Eve summary at the start of the forecast, then used the up to date graphics for the rest of the forecast. I wonder how that happened in two separate regions.

For some reason weather computers seem to never be cleared out. I'd assume it's because the weather computers are a completely separate system from what ever powers the astons and full screen graphics.

Some systems here in the US are apparently tricky when it comes to graphics. The most popular weather system/data provider here in the US and likely Canada, WSI, could only load the hundreds of templates and scenes especially designed for the system by sending them to WSI who would then load them to the computer. This was told to me by meteorologists and other users over at TVNewsTalk in various posts when similar instances have popped up. I'm not sure if this is still the case but it was recently.

I remember Paul Hudson once put Xeve Xday Bday on the outlook screen years ago as the graphics can only accommodate Mon Tue Wed etc. he hasn't done it since.

Do we know if the BBC are planning to stick with WeatherScape XT from Metra or switch to the WeatherSuite graphics system from Meteo who will be providing the data?

https://www.meteogroup.com/sites/default/files/ibc-brochure.pdf

Is that a decision that the BBC makes, or Meteo as the outsourcer?

Don't know if it has been mentioned before but just seen Alex Deakin doing the weather on Channel 5.
