The most annoying thing about the BBC News lower thirds is that waste of space semi transparent black bar. It needlessly hides part of the picture and looks ugly.

That black bar is pointless. Would look better with just the BBC logo without that bar, straight on the image.

In my opinion, I think it looks far better and neater like that than with just the BBC News / BBC World News box there on its own. Yes, there may be a certain "pointlessness" with all that transparent black but I actually kind of like it. Also considering that the background is intended for the astons, there is that slight subliminal / not noticable / more natural feel that occurs when they appear onscreen as there is no "ta da" moment like on the 2013-2019 set.

The slightly too narrow red box on the black bar has always slightly bothered me. I don't think that no bar would suit it at all - the logo would look even more out of place.

I've mocked up a few versions - to see what other people think. Personally, I'd opt for the red bar version.

Wouldn't the red bar start to look a bit messy, and a bit of an eyesore, when it goes up and down multiple times?
(I also see you've sneaked Gill Sans in there Wink)

Possibly - I've always felt the moving logo was a bit of an odd choice too. Here's a version with the bar kept at the bottom. (Although I would've thought that the other version would appeal to certain forumers nostalgia - it has a very 2002-era News 24 vibe.)

Well, if you're improving the BBC News graphics...

100% correct. The onscreen graphics are the worst I've ever seen on BBC News with the possible exception of the time they were using Gill Sans Ultra Bold in 2002/2003(?).

Combined with the hideous Reith font, car crash all round imo. I really liked the onscreen graphics which went before although I wish then as now that they'd drop their insistence on using 4:3 safe areas.

Since when did BBC news start adding world clocks onto their flipper? I thought it was only world news that did it. Tonight was the first time I noticed it. I did notice that the world news and news channel flipper were showing the same headlines which isn’t usually the case. They were not in sync though. Also the clocks that were being shown on the news channel flipper were not the same ones that were on world even though the flippers were in the same order.

I wonder if for some strange reason, the NC were using the WN ticker.

I've only ever seen local times on World News.

I always think that the BBC news logo would be better on the white bar, inline with the clock. But that would probably mean ending the safe zone.

I agree. They might be able to do more if they used 16:9 like every other company in 2021.

It looks weird having the two elements that have a red background (clock and logo) at opposite sides of the screen at different heights. It's like they've just been plonked in those positions, like they don't know where else to put them.
Maybe it would look better if the clock moved to the right side of the screen on the black bar, directly above the clock. Or vice versa, if the clock moved to the left underneath the logo.

I think they were, the headlines didn’t have the detail that they usually have and as I said they were all the same as world news. They had a weird one in it that said something like “working from bed: it’s great I don’t even have to get dressed” which was a website headline.

Also the world clocks are gone today so it must’ve just been an issue with the news channel one. Which is a shame I quite liked them.

Or they could just get rid of the box and have the clock as just text.

I noticed the really weird flicker headlines on World News as well, like they were just simply taking headline text from the website. There was some sort of error message on one of them too. Also, I minor point, but the flicker dots on the 'interactive' section were in red, but the 'headlines' text was in the blue used for interactive. Something still isn't right with the flicker headlines on World News, they're all very vague and not displaying any breaking news, whilst News Channel is. Some headlines are cut off and not displaying full sentences.

Edit: In fact News Channel is only showing breaking news and only one breaking news story. No headlines, sport or interactive.
