What gets me most about the 2010 election theme is that on the additional programmes it's used on, they use either the most boring part or edit it extremely badly. The full theme itself isn't actually that bad (although it's still no Arthur!)
Case in point, the Election Tonight programme on the BBC News Channel used the standard BBC News bed and then suddenly cut to one of the more whiney bits of the theme with little development. It makes Channel 5's orchestral orgasm theme from the 00s sound great.
I do have to agree with Isontine that the election theme in itself is actually a really good piece of music and if I recall correctly there are several different cuts/variations such as the Brass heavy one used by S4C in 2010 and US2012 and a very light one used by a BBC Wales Debate. The cut they've picked for Election Today is just quite dull and bland and doesn't really build to anything not like the full version.
Although having previously said on here that it was better than Arthur (sacrilegious I know) I have to come grovelling back having watched the 2005 Election in its entirety recently and noticed how the arrangement they used for that election was possibly one of the greatest themes for any News/Current Affairs/Politics programme ever.
I am liking the hexagons though, this is the third strong brand the BBC had given elections in a row. The pie charts, the pins and now this - also if you go back and look at the local/euro branding a year or so before a general election you can see the new brand taking place - you can see the origins of the pie chart in the 2004 Euro election coverage. Likewise the origins of the pins can be seen in the 2009 Euro election and elements of these hexagons are quite heavily borrowed from last years Scottish referendum.

This seems like they are going in the direction of "a TV version of Radio 5 Live" which IIRC was the original proposal behind BBC News 24 at launch. More variety to the schedule can only be a good thing.

It looks like this show will have decent production values and a real editorial focus, which can only be a good thing for the News Channel. But it'll be interesting to see whether it contains a decent amount of actual news, and also how it handles breaking news. if it gets those elements wrong it'll be a massive departure from the rest of the channel's output and I fear people won't watch.
Looking forward to seeing what they've actually come up with...
