Could it be because the programme started at 8pm and with no strong language warning before it, therefore the whole show should ideally be under pre watershed rules?
A simple fix for that would be having an ident coming out of a post 9pm ad break warning of potential strong language. I expect they didn't do this because there's presumably a fairly large child audience owing to some of the acts performing.
Not sure why they needed to mute Mark Ronson there now it's passed 10PM, unless what he said was libellous.

Trust that from Adele.
There was one slip up with Adele getting one f-bomb out on air. Ant & Dec apologised shortly after.

Was it last year or the year before where we had the Kanye West performance where nearly all of it was muted... but a few swear words still managed to slip through?

Slip up is an understatement. They managed to mute most of her acceptance speech, only to put the sound back on when she dropped the f-bomb.
And then muted whatever she said after it.

Hmm, strange indeed, but it was the case. Presumably after 1984, now Sixty Minutes was over there was no other show to hang them on - although the Six O'Clock News Rock and Pop Awards would have been good, with Nicholas Witchell - so they decided to approach the BPI about televising their event. The best bit about the untelevised early eighties awards was Spandau Ballet winning the Sanyo award for Technical Excellence.
You learn something new every day, I've spent over thirty years under the impression that the BPI Awards had simply been a continuation of the British Rock and Pop Awards.
Seems strange then that in both 1983 and 1984 the BBC's show took place on exactly the same day as the BPI Awards...

I thought that Ant & Dec did a brilliant job, better than try did last year despite the music bods not wanting to join in with much fun.
Agreed, Ant & Dec were the only reason why I watched the Brit Awards this year and last. The show's going to die without them IMO.
