The Five network was loss making when it was sold, hence it only went for £103m. That's less than some TV channel budgets! If Channel 5 is to continue, it has to change direction and for Desmond to tie it in with his publications makes perfect business sense. He seems to be aiming to make it a cross between ITV2 and BBC3 but with a bigger budget, which even if the overall audience falls, the profits will pick up. If this change doesn't happen then Channel 5 would eventually be forced off air.
I think the problem is less the actual re-brand, but the trashy tabloid re-positioning of the channel's attitude and programming.
