I've had it confirmed by a friend that the new Blue Peter presenter is Barney Harwood. Joel leaves in three weeks.
Would this be the first time that the Blue Peter presenter is not an unknown, especially to the CBBC audience. I think Konnie worked on Channel 5's Milkshake before Blue Peter, but that's the only one that I can think of.
Helen Skelton was a reporter on Sportsround/Newsround prior to BP, although I don't think it was for that long.
But yeah Anthea Turner is probably the best example of someone who was already well-known, she was also a bit older too (32 I think).
Peter Purves - former Dr Who assistant. Tina Heath - Lizzie Dripping. Peter Duncan - star of a children's drama. Janet Ellis - Jigsaw. Mark Curry - Saturday Picture Show. Yvette Fielding - Seeview. Diane Louise-Jordan - Corners. Tim Vincent - Children's Ward.
So, yes, lots of BP presenters over the years were already known to children either as performers or presenters. Although, sadly, I can't really compare the current team - whatever their qualities - to any of them as the style of BP has changed so fundamentally. The fact what was such a magnificent and much-loved programme is languishing away with 300,000 viewers and is no longer watched by people outside the target audience to any great extent is heartbreaking.
I would hardly say Barney Harwood is a 'good choice' for Blue Peter. He's thoroughly dull and "nicey nicey boring presenter" doesn't appeal to kids anymore. Mind you, neither does Blue Peter, so I can see why he's been chosen.
