Salford actually.

As far as I'm concerned it's Manchester.

Wrong side of the River to be Manchester - and wrong side of the Canal to be Trafford. It is like saying Wolverhampton is Birmingham, or Derby is Nottingham!

Remember Salford is also a City - separate from Manchester!

Whilst I understand the geography of the situation, I don't care. People are always going to see the BBC products from Salford Quays as something from Manchester, even BBC references the move to Salford Quays on the MOTD titles with a 'Welcome To Manchester' sign.

Lets just call it Greater Manchester.

Lets just call it Greater Manchester.

Which we can then shorten down to Manchester.

As far as I'm concerned, and perhaps everyone in Salford, you are completely wrong.

Salford and Manchester are indeed two seperate cities, both right next door to each other.

Wrong again. BBC Productions from Salford Quays are from Salford, NOT Manchester. It's an undeniable fact.
As for the "Welcome to Manchester" sign on MoTD, you do realise that refers to City and United don't you?
You know, the two massively popular premier league football teams based in Manchester. It has nothing to
do with the location of the studio where MoTD is now broadcast from.

Lets just call it Greater Manchester.

Which we can then shorten down to Manchester.

Which still doesn't apply to the city where the BBC's new northern base is. That is Salford, not Manchester.

FWIW - I'm from Manchester, not Salford!

That makes sense. I can understand why you'd not want people to associate your city with Salford.

I can see where Jon is coming from anyway. To Northerners, Hammersmith, Shepherd's Bush, Westminster, it's all "London". And to Southerners, Salford and Trafford are all "Manchester".

I'm willing to bet most people from Salford describe themselves as from Manchester on Facebook.

Ahhh the infamous Manchester City (the only Premiership football team that actually plays within the city boundaries) poster which was put up at the beginning of Deansgate when they had signed Carlos Tevez from Trafford's Manchester United a few years ago.

I am not a Manc for a Salfordite but a Boltonian and I hate being associated with Manchester (I'd rather be more associated with Liverpool - at least they can make jokes about themsleves!)

Only reason being as Salford is not in the list of places, yet (unless that has changed). I had to do the same when I joined but now proudly put Bolton!

Well, it's not quite like that so much. I have nothing against Salford or the people of Salford. I just get irked when
some folks outside Manchester or Salford wrongly insist the City of Salford is just a part of Manchester. It's like
saying Birkenhead is part of Liverpool ... many people on Mersyside would get irked at that I'm sure.

For me as a northerner and a Mancunian, I consider Hammersmith, West Ham, Sheperds Bush, Westminster ... etc ... to
be districts/areas of London with their own seperate council authorities. The only exception is the City of Westminster,
a city within a city. Similarly, the financial district, referred to as The City Of London, albeit within London itself.

I can understand why some might think Salford and Manchester are the same, since they're both right next to one
another on the map, but to insist that one is part of the other, after being told otherwise, is just plain ignorance.
They're both cities in their own right, with their own city councils, although they share the 0161 STD code.

A similar thing ... I live very close to the boundary between Whitefield and Bury. Whitefield is a suburb of Manchester,
with postcodes starting M45, but Bury is officially classed as part of Lancashire, with it's postcodes starting with BL.
Both areas have the 0161 STD code, and ... Whitefield is part of ... the Metropolitan Borough of ... Bury!

And to think this thread started off as a discussion about Blue Peter ... now it's a local geography debate!

Certain members of my family who live in Birkenhead would be irked at being described as being on Merseyside, as the Wirral is historically part of Cheshire... Wink
