It would seem that Mary Nightingal;e is the most senior female presenter at ITN, although you would never hear that from anyone there. She replaced Kirsty Young when she moved to 5.

Well Katie was really supposed to be Media Editor but when Kirsty and Mary went on Maternity leave she has had the job of filling in for them, and I believe she belongs on the Weekend News... that's where she was before Mary going. I should imagine Mary and Katie are sort of similar, they're about the same age and have both had alot of experience on the Evening News.

Katie Derham is a lot younger than Mary. You will find Mary is close to 40, whereas Katie was just 28 when she began presenting for ITN, not too sure how long ago that was.

UPDATE ON ITV NEWS REVAMP NEXT YEAR

I've just heard from my source at ITN that the new look ITV NEWS could be based on a totally virtual reality set. He says nothing is set in stone, but this is what has been spoken of. Sounds interesting. Lets face it, ITV news is pretty damn hot when it comes to VR.

There's two years between them. When I last looked Mary was 31 and Katie was 33.

I would suggest you are a bit out, Mary is 39 or 40, this article posted in 2001 confirms this as well as the situation between her and Katie.

If this is true, I would hope the set will look realistic. You can get some pretty naff virtual reality.

CNN have got the right idea - an absolutely enourmous set (VR of course)...

Then again, something about having a REAL, enourmous news studio with balconies and such makes the news so much more interesting to watch. Big studios make things more dramatic.

Yep - and VR can have an effect of distancing the viewer from the programme - by making the news presentation "feel" unreal.

The BBC used a form of VR (albeit without any clever camera tracking) to create the mid-90s blue/cut glass look- but returned to a more real set after this - though the current look involves a real projection of a virtual newsroom. Kind of the best, or worst, of both worlds.

If ITN can get the lighting and keying, as well as the design right, it could be stunning. Or it could be bells and whistles, gadgets and gimmicks, for no reason. (Lets hope it isn't like their VR set they use for reports - where everything that can move, does...)

I've read somewhere Mary is prone to losing her voice without warning and fears it happening on air.

Maybe they'll have Mary as the main newsreader with Katie sat nearby incase her voice goes!!!

Katie seems to be relegated to Lunchtime this week.

And is a 10.30pm bulletin usually branded News at Ten - or is that just to con Trevor McDonald into thinking it's earlier!

Yes if its on between 10 and 10.30 it'll be branded News at Ten and Trevor will think about presenting it

If it's after 10.30 it'll be ITV News and Trevor won't give it a second thought

Back to Katie v Mary, I prefer Katie Derham much more than Mary and she hit the right note on today's Lunchtime News and is a worthy stand in for regular presenter Nicholas Owen

Neither are particular heavyweight though, in fact the most serious female presenter they have is probably Andrea Catherwood
