Shouldn't he be standing in on This Morning that week though?

He'll more than likely be doing both. He used to do both on occasion when he was at Sky. He just won't have as long a commute!

One example when the long commute got the better of him can be seen here:

At the TOTH at 8am this morning they ran a Michael Bolton track over the 'titles' instead of the traditional voice over and then spoke to him quickly at the desk, then handed over to Sean to read the full news Bulletin - which actually worked quite well...

Interesting idea, as someone else said does make it look like GMA or Today in the US, however I think that I'd still have a voiceover rather than none at all.

I wouldn't mind seeing it happen more frequently. However, I reckon it would be better if they still inserted the voiceover.

Nope. It'd be a mess with the voiceover unless it was an instrumental version of the track used.

If it was a live VO, with more energy, it could work.

That's always a risk, but in my opinion it works quite well on Sunrise in Australia for example:

It's a shame they don't do live voice overs on GMB, it would probably sound better if they did!

Would a live VO make a difference, though? Surely it's just a case of directing the voiceover have a more 'energetic' read. Does any brekkie programmes actually do live VOs, that's a new one on me.

Don't think they have live VO's, but AFAIK NBC have the VO read differently in a session so they can user any cut of music under it.

A live VO would allow the announcer to react to the music, sort of 'getting into the spirit of things', much like Kate & Charlotte were.

But realistically, getting up at 4am just to say 'Live from ITV Studios in London' is a bit farfetched. Just record an energetic read.
