Sesame Street? An odd choice for two reasons. One, it's a kids show - ITV, which provides a lot of UTV Ireland's programmes, doesn't normally air kids shows outside of the breakfast slot. And two, Sesame Street hasn't aired in the UK for ages, I assume it was the same in Ireland. If even Nick Jr or Tiny Pop wouldn't pick it up, it clearly isn't popular nowadays on this side of the Atlantic. At the very least, it proves that the channel isn't just ITV Ireland.

Well to defend Sesame Street, maybe it's not popular in Ireland or the UK for the very reason it's not on Mainstream stations (sorry, childhood Chinamug had to defend Big Bird Very Happy ) Having said that I'd agree it's a very odd choice. Perhaps if they were going to show Childrens programmes before and after it, you could see an actual plan, But it's just there totally out of place between Teleshopping and Storage Hoarders. I actually don't think they really care too much about the weekends at the moment. Year one just appears to be getting something on air. UTV seem to be quite happy to lose 10 or 15 million on this before it turns around. Their main competitor will close if it has the same losses over the next 2 years. The stations are roughly watched by the same numbers at this stage. It seems to be obvious what UTV are up to.

I can't remember it airing on an Irish channel before - that said TG4 did do an Irish dub of Play with me Sesame so it stands to reason that they may have shown Sesame Street at one stage.

BBC NI did Sesame Street too. It's not too odd really - they air it when ITV show kids shows and UTV have obviously picked it up at a price which makes it worth while airing at 7.30am. It's appeal is beyond kids too - probably more a nostalgia fest than anything for many viewers.

'Sesame Tree' to give the show it's official title was commissioned for BBC NI / CBeebies back in 2008. I think one of the UTV Ireland bosses worked for the production company so probably was easy to acquire.

They are kinda stuck in a bind between a UPC audience that would like nothing more than for them to be ITV Ireland and curse them for every ITV programme they miss, and another crowd (Saorview/Freesat viewers) who criticise them for them for being so close to ITV. Making one happy antagonises the other.

Freesat Viewers and indeed Sky Viewers can't say much as They can get ITV services as before. For the vast majority of viewers (75%) it has expanded choice. UPC is a problem but UTV's Share of the Market before they Launched the station was under 3 percent. If everyone who has complained about UTV Ireland watched the old UTV, there would never have been a need to launch UTV Ireland. There is an anti Ulster thing going on as well in some of the complaints. They're openly sectarian at times. If they said what they posted in public they'd be in trouble.

UTV Ireland isn't a station I'd watch personally (neither would I watch modern ITV) and I can understand how some people would be upset, but from a business point of view they've taken a calculated gamble that will probably pay off in the long term.

Not really a surprise, They'll probably lose a lot more before they turn the corner. All Irish Stations seem to be hurting at the moment, there's never been a better time to buy advertising with each broadcaster undercutting the other. However, it will end in tears.

Meanwhile, they see sense in another area and move their Teatime Bulletin back to 5.30, with hourly updates all day from GMB onwards.

They should have started out like this to be honest. Doesn't matter how good your News is if you're putting up against RTE One's Six-One.
