Due to ITV cutbacks, it would be the delightful Maggie Mash 24/7.

Out of Vision. These days. The Carlton London guy who was on last night. Can't remember his name?? and Channel 5's Bill Buckley.

But if we are heading towards ONE ITV, who would the announcers be.????Thats a hard one;)

Which everyone across the country is likely to hear, as he will probably but into the network at some point, to say something, which the regional announcers could do just as well

Now I think thats where you are wrong. If only some of the other regional announcers were as good. How did you get his name Andrew. Did you call the duty office.????

Oh if only <G>

Actually Mark did a great link into Emmerdale tonight - it went along the lines of 'A very good evening to you and a warm welcome to tonights programmes here on Carlton' - excellent!

All we needed was the announcement to be in-vison and it would have been like the personal local announcements we were used to in the 70's and 80's.

Is that announcer with the very deep voice who's been announcing on BBC1 for as long as I can remember still about?  He was the last of the 'old brigade', and I think his name's Peter Brooke.  (Not so long ago, I heard him announce BBC1 as BBC2 - strange mistake to make for someone who'd been there so long!)

The other announcer whose name sticks in my mind is BBC2's David Allan.  They were both from the days when all their announcers sounded very distinctly 'BBC'.

Peter Brooke, now sadly retired.

There are many reasons that he should've been awarded some sort of honour for service to broadcasting, not least the fact that he tried so hard to 'keep with the times'.

Listen to a Peter Brooke junction from the 70s or 80s and compare it with the almost-cockerney intonation of the 90s.

There exists an hilarious clip somewhere of Radio 3's frequency changeover in the seventies featuring Mr Brooke. You can imagine him wearing a dinner-jacket whilst reading the (extremely banal) instructions for listeners.

You can imagine him wearing a baseball cap and ripped jeans during his 'trouble for Grant in half an hour on BBC-1, but first here's Carol Smilie' era.

Also noteworthy for using dialogue from programmes (mostly Eastenders) within scripts: 'Come on Dot, you'll enjoy it when you get there: Eastenders is next on BBC-1.' Unsure whether the RT or Mr Brooke pioneered this bizarre practice.

As you can tell, I quite liked him. He gets my vote.

Going back a bit, David Hamilton on TTTV/Thames in the 60's/70's was a true innovator, and an absolute nutcase on-air as well.

Tom Edwards on Thames also deserves a mention, as does John Morgan on Border -- the only announcer I know of who used to take the mickey out of the adverts......

Colin Weston at Granada of course, Ian Stirling at TSW, Roger Shaw as well were all great announcers. Redvers Kyle (Rediffusion/Yorkshire) was also a memorable announcer.

Julian Simmons (UTV) is my pick of the announcers of today, one of the few announcers who makes me laugh on a regular basis. The old smoothie at Tyne Tees Neville Wanless (he of the professional manner and ill-fitting suits) made the job look effortless and was another of my favourites, and no-one who lived in the North East in the 80's and 90's could forget Bill Steel's unique loose style either.

The point is that, all the Carlton/LWT announcers say accross the network is something which is thought of as so important, that the local announcers can't say it!
Such as 'Emmerdale will be back on Sunday at 7pm'

Maybe - but we must remember that Carlton/LWT announcers don't just shove up the fader and think 'I'll address the nation now with a quickie about Emmerdale' these links are planned by those above in Network Control.
