I wonder when that practice stopped? Certainly by 1987 and the well known VTR in edit mode cock up the PPBs were being played out from Thames/LWT themselves.

It must have stopped when the rules changed, and the PPBs stopped being simulcast at 9pm. Possibly around the time C4 started in 82? C4 (nor C5) have only ever shown PEBs, and not PPBs I think?

BTW, apologies to Steve W, I didn't notice he'd already told the story of Peter Brook, despite me quoting it. Doh

It would certainly have stopped by the eighties as they were no longer being broadcast at the same time.

That used to be the case in the seventies, but I've got a Radio Times from 1981 where there are complaints that a Labour PPB was shown on all channels simultaneously, like the bad old days. The reply says that the broadcasters and parties had agreed most wouldn't, but Labour still preferred it, so half of their PPBs could be simulcast. But they stopped doing that not long after.

Another regular BBC/ITV simulcast of the 70s/80s I seem to remember were the FA Cup Draws. I only ever remember them being hosted by the BBC, in the Grandstand studio, and World of Sport opted in?

I don't think the FA Cup draws were ever televised in that era, they were always on the radio alone. They used to do the League Cup draw on TV, but I think ITV had them alone - certainly Brian Moore told the story of how they did one once on On The Ball and five minutes before they went live, they dropped the balls all over the studio floor and only found the last one with seconds to go. So in the next round they pre-recorded it, and when Brian introduced it, they cut to the caption with the completed draw.

I know there was an England vs Scotland match in the seventies, in the days both channels simulcast it as one of the few live football matches a season, when ITV lost pictures and simulcast the Beeb's for a few minutes while they got them back. The Beeb deliberately didn't show any of their graphics while they were simulcasting, and both broadcasters made their pictures available to each other in case of this exact situation.

I think the Queen's Speech was another programme played out by the Beeb which ITV opted into, at least for a bit.

Umm. A mystery then, I do seem to remember on one occasion, the moment World of Sport had opted out, the camera pulled out, and Frank Bough walked into shot. I wonder what it is? (assuming I didn't dream it, anything is possible 😬)

There was the 1981 Royal Wedding, and ITV losing the St Pauls OB feed for a few minutes. They took the Beeb then, while someone on LWT's roof managed to pick up the microwave signal, that had been lost into Millbank Tower?

There was a clip from a 1970s budget broadcast with Denis Healey posted on here recently that was topped and tailed with an INDEPENDENT TELEVISION caption (and David Hamilton, presumably at Thames, on announcing duties) that I thought might have come from those days, as it might have been simpler than 15 different companies trying to opt into the BBC. Can't find the thing now, of course.

It always seemed to be (simulcast or not) something that was 'top and tailed' by a Thames or LWT continuity announcer, not the local announcers ?

ITV Studios Entertainment has been rebranded as Lifted Entertainment (no, I’m not sure what that means either) so expect to see that on the end of Saturday Night Takeaway next week.

It's interesting that ITV Studios has been rebranding their productions labels in the UK for the last few years. I think it's just ITV Studios Daytime and Jeff Pope's ITV Studios label that still retain the ITV Studios name.

It is quite surprising that they'd move a 5m overnight drama for a two hour interview. They must be expecting big numbers.

Don’t wanting to sound stupid, but can I ask why would they fragment a mega brand into separate smaller companies? For tax purposes?
