Because the last time ITV tried to put on a big show on New Year's Eve, they were hammered in the ratings by BBC One. It's probably easier/cheaper/less embarrassing for them not to bother.
In any case, the Bridget Jones film ended at 11:45 - it was ITV News that welcomed in the new year with a fifteen minute programme, and that has been the norm for some years now.
Forgive me if this has been covered in this thread, but is there a reason why ITV just haven't bothered with any New Years programming despite being the biggest commercial broadcaster in the country? BBC One have a special Graham Norton Show, New Year Live, and then John Bishop Live. BBC Two have the traditional Hootenanny. ITV took us up to midnight with Bridget Jones's Diary - a film from 2001. Even Channel 4 gave us New Years Specstacular and a House Party set throughout the night, and it's safe to say that both of those programmes - although subjective - are special enough for New Years. Why do ITV give us next to nothing?
