I am almost sure it was around April '98 that they picked up the bid and started to design them.

Seems like it was in May:

ITV is expected to appoint a design agency this week to create a new identity for the channel. Ortmans Young International, Red Pepper and English & Pockett have been shortlisted.

ITV has appointed brand consultants English & Pockett to develop its brand identity. The agency was hired after a three-way pitch, which included Ortmans Young International and Red Pepper.

"Hired after a three way pitch" could mean that prototypes for the logo had been designed as part of that pitch by E&P so who knows, it could have been as early as 1997 that work started on that package.

Interesting image of past ITV logos

and the current one (for reference)

Wonder if ITV will go for a full corporate rebrand or just refresh with the current 'itv' logo!

I quite like the middle left of the old logos, it had more of a design than purely a typeface.

In other news... There have been no announcers over the ITV1HD idents this morning. I'm not sure if the same has happened to the main ITV1, or if it's just the HD variant.

See I still like the 1989 one, a lot will argue it's dated but I think it's a better designed logo than the 1998 & 2006 versions, when does the middle right one date from never seen that before?

I might as well just copy your post Johnny because I'm a fan of the 1989 logo too (I grew up with it - perhaps your username might indicate you were born the same year as me!) - and have never seen that middle one before either.

I also like the middle left but prefer the 2006 versions over the 1989 or 1998 versions.

I grew up with the 1989 logo too, and I thought it was a superb logo for its time. I was sad to see it scrapped.

I do wish though they had stuck with the 4 box motif - that worked rather well IMO and was a simply but effective logo which didn't require the brand to be explicitly written out in text as part of the logo. That said though I'm not quite sure where they could have gone with it.

That was the issue. As could be seen from itv3's original branding, there was nowhere to really go, plus as would said it was a bit of a rip-off of the BBC's blocks

It was a bit. But it was good. Really liked the ITV3 "cube" logo.

The more I think about it the more I think they should literally start from scratch with this rebrand and try and go for something that will last, and be more versatile. I think the ITV logo itself should be more unique and a standalone motif like the BBC's boxes.

I still find the 1989 one to be the best. It might not have aged well but it's the most distinct.
