I think it was obvious that Susan would get through to the final last night given all the hype since her first audition was shown. It was even mentioned on the ITV News straight afterwards.

Good show tho - nice to see that not all the acts put through to the semi finals were good which makes the show more interesting to watch.

Interesting perhaps (I didn't watch), but I can only imagine how I would feel if I were one of the other contestants. Its inevitable that Boyle will win. The rest may as well not bother trying.

I come down squarely in the camp of "she's nothing special". There's more talent in amateur theatre companies across the land. I mean, *way* more talent.

All it really does is shine a light on Cowell, Holden and Moron's pathetic sense of awe that an ugly old frump can hold a tune.

Bleh.

Anyway, a great first show with a couple of acts already out arguably worthy of a place in the final - although I wouldn't say Natalie was one of them - I thought she was awful.

As for Susan Boyle - terrible start to her song, but she rescued it in the end. It's all gone to her head though - her attitude is just cringe worthy now, and not the quiet unassuming woman we saw during the auditions.

So glad Diversity made it though (heck, I even voted!). Looks like Flawless will be closing the show tonight from the previews yesterday, so obviously they're the act the producers want straight through as in every single semi-final over previous series the act performing last gets straight into the final.

To go back to what Simon Cowell said to Shaheen Jafargholi: The choice of song can and really does make a difference to how you come across. After Shaheen managed to effectively murder 'Valerie' during his audition, the follow-up with 'Who's Lovin' You' was done brilliantly by him. If he'd continued with 'Valerie' he would probably not have made the semi-final.

Likewise if Natalie had belted out 'Superstar' at the audition in the same fashion as she did during the semi-final, a performance that was ultimately ruined by the wrong choice of song, I doubt she'd be in the semis either. That being said, I'll be surprised if she's not signed up by a record company because Natalie is good, given the right song.

With regard to the rest of the acts: I really wanted Diversity to go through, as I really loved the act. The violinist was a carbon copy of Vanessa Mae, to all intents and purposes. Darth Jackson had potential from the audition but it was ruined on the night by was a crap act. The "belly dancer" was nice to look at, but that was all. Something would be major wrong somewhere if Nick Hell ever won a show like this because I can't see Her Majesty wanting to watch somebody do painful things to themselves with pickaxes and a chainsaw. Faces of Disco was a great act, though I think it has limited appeal and scope for advancement. Susan Boyle has done in 72 hours what many celebrities take years to do - crack America.

How many viewers did it get?

EDIT: According to wikipedia, it got 11.8 million viewers peaking at 13.3 million. I suspect Saturday's show will attain more viewers.

Average was 11.8m I think which was a 49.9% share with a fifteen minute average peak of 13.3m when Big Boyle performed.

I didn't think she was anything special at the audition either - good enough to get through, but I wouldn't have put her through to the live shows. She would probably be a lot better in 12 months time.

It was crap full stop. I wasn't a fan of Signature last year but at least it was original back then - far too many "let's pretend to be bad and then impersonate Jacko" acts this year.

They're gross, but he came across as a really likeable person. I think though judging them by their own standards last night's act was very poor in comparison to the audition. Perhaps Health and Safety had got the better of them, but that would always be a factor anyway. So not a worthy winner at all, but much more deserving of a place in the live shows than the likes of Darth Jackson.

P.S. Ant's haircut - why on earth would he want to make his forehead look even bigger?

The audience laughter is very recognisable from TLS Studio 1 too, I can always tell when a programme is from there just because of the laughter, it's slightly distorted

"slightly"? The audience sound from TLS is almost always horribly square - it has always had that "LWT" sound, and until they got rid of the awful Hitachi's, it had that awful "LWT" look as well. (Horribly edge enhanced)

I don't think Susan was ever 'unassuming'. Go back and watch her audition and you'll see what I mean.

As for Natalie - the song choice tends to be made by the production staff doesn't it? I can't help but think it was done deliberately to ensure a Susan win.

As for Shaheen - it's obvious the whole 'Valerie was crap, do you have a second song?' stunt was set up from the beginning. He was always going to sail through.

The Boyle story has exploded in a way I don't think any of them expected, and it's clear from the way the auditions were edited that it's not something they anticipated. They're probably glad of the publicity (and it's undoubtedly helped the ratings during a series that's not had the great spread of talent like last year) but making it 'the Susan Boyle show' is not exactly the ideal situation, even if it's impossible to treat her as a 'normal contestant' when she's anything but at this stage.

Flawless and Shaun Smith through to the final and deserverably so. Jamie Pugh had a bad performance and my thought's him being exposed as a fake in The Sun Newspaper didn't help his cause either.

Saturday is shaping up to be a great final. I'm not so sure of Susan Boyle to be the clear cut winner after all, although I'd still wouldn't bet against her not winning

I didn't really want another singer getting through, otherwise we may aswell be voting for The X Factor... I much preferred Gareth to Shaun anyway. Shaun can sing, granted. But I bet he can't do it without opening his mouth!
