I still can't get my head around this. Was there really not a single person who looked at that and went "hang on... I can't see the blocks."
Yeh... I know...
Weirdly, the blocks seem to fade in as an independent layer, if you see what I mean. (If this assumption is correct) it appears whoever designed that didn't think it necessary to amend the blocks layer to white or yellow or anything but black.
Those endboards have gone untouched for five years. What more needs to be said. I'm at loss to explain who could possibly think they look good, acceptable for BBC2 in 2014. I was five years ago.
Just when you thought they couldn't get any uglier!
Anyway, great to see us getting some of the old idents, just a shame it's limited to the 50th specials, Swan and Predator. Are the nations showing any more? Surely there's room to fit a few more in? I don't think I've seen a junction with the usual lot. Or is it maybe a couple of oldies on rotation every week until further notice? Either way, they're just simply better and great to see on a big screen these days.
(And that's Predator now shown across three separate rebrands!)
These endboards have never looked good - indeed this ident set and everything that goes with it has had problems ever since they launched. They can just about get away with the idents (though nobody would complain if the 90's versions remained) but the presentation would be significantly improved by just replacing the endcaps on promos. It doesn't have to be anything complicated at all - just sticking to white text over an image with the box on screen would cost nothing but look so much better.

You know a channel's branding is in trouble when they spend time showing classic idents without even the current logo superimposed on it.

I can't comment on BBC2 Scotland, as I haven't kept an eye on them, but the rest of the nations haven't, as of yet, shown any more of the old idents other than Swan and Predator - except that BBC2 Wales also show an edit of Swan, starting from roughly 15" in, and, more often than not, played up to the 30" point, at which point it freezes if the continuity announcement still continues.
Predator looks absolutely fantastic upscaled on BBC2 HD, almost as good as an HD transfer.
I think I've seen one of the regular idents used once in the last 2 months and that was Zoetrope before either Newsnight or a film (although I've not watched enough BBC2 to say if this is a fair reflection of their avoidance of them).
BBC 2 just briefly crashed leaving the the NC to pick it up during PMQ's. It went black a couple of times before the NC picked it up. Although BBC 2 seems to be back on the Daily Politics now...
