It wasn't so much a marketing device as an integral part of the musical basis for each of the unique melodies in a number of the idents, notably in 'Kites'. This meant it wasn't always noticeable, yet it did it's intended job.
It would seem now, though, that they want it to stand out and identify the channel; however, it probably won't be as effective as it was yesterday in doing this, largely because on the whole, the 'hook' now comprises three brief notes tacked onto the start of a randomly-picked piece which will usually be audible for far longer than said notes. Remember that the hook in the 'rhythm & movement' era wasn't effective because it was at the start, but rather because it was a 'theme with variations'.
