Maybe I should have rephased that then - I think you're all completely missing that there isn't actually a problem with that soundbite.
There have been far far worse examples - this IMO leans far more towards "gravitas" than "cheery". And in any case, compared to most coverage of the Oscar Pistorious trial in the 17 years since it started this is positively sedate.
Continuity announcers should never mention the content of the news, that should be left to newsreaders.
In this context I 100% agree. However there's nothing wrong per se with CAs reading the news, it was
routine with smaller ITV companies back in the 70s and 80s, and of course the Beeb merged the two functions
during the enhanced regional pres in the 70s.
What I do have a problem with are CAs using the headlines as promotional teasers, as if
tonight there's lot's of Schadenfreude to soak up, so tune in at Ten
.
Indeed BBC Wales had a late night news bulletin before closedown, which was read by the duty CA over a slide of the BBC Wales Today logo. There was also a video once on youtube (no longer on) which featured a BBC News report on Emperor Hirohito's death, and it was read out by the duty CA, over a slide with a picture of the Emperor and the caption "News Report". I think for late at night there's nothing wrong with the CA reading the news.
I don't see a problem with that voiceover. Not cheerful at all, he's just reading a script.
The tone goes against the conventions of reading a serious news story and is more in line with how you'd expect the plotline fictional murder mystery to be read out,
you'd never
hear a TV or Radio newsreader read a headline like that in such a manner. I can't understand how people don't see that.
I think it's just an error of judgement though which the CA will learn from and he won't make the same mistake again.
It's Peter Offer. He's been an announcer at the BBC for years.
i thought it was peter offer, but wasn't sure - because i'm pretty sure i recall him leaving and saying good bye over a christmas ident.
anyway, glad he's back - he has to be one of the best announcers around. i'm not quite sure what everybody is getting upset about, it perhaps seemed a little chirpy but certainly not inappropriate.

How would you feel if a chirpy announcer was reporting on the death of your mother/father/brother/sister... etc?
