It is amazing though how far down the pyramid in news presenting the four day week seems to go, while in radio it's not the case.

Is the show continuing on BBC News only during the Olympics?

According to current listings yes but BBC News channel listings aren't always accurate beyond a week (they tend to copy the previous week's and then amend them nearer the time)

Has VD ever done a complete week?

Surely it's time to rename the show given she's hardly bloody there. (Yes I know she has had health problems).

Well those health problems are the reason, aren't they? Big C treatment lasts a long time, even as an outpatient. That is not to mention that she will have other commitments. Can't imagine the BBC would come across very well if they took her show away from her (even just in name), because she'd been absent due to a completely indiscriminate illness...

Yeah but prior to that she would go AWOL constantly on her radio show.

Probably more a case of AWL.

True.

Considering most news channel presenters have generally done four days on air should anyone expect Victoria to be doing more?

No, but then this is the only programme named after a presenter (other than Marr) on any of the BBC News TV outlets. At least with BBC World News XX with XX programmes they drop the 'with XX' if they aren't presenting it. Also this programme has been referred to on screen as Victoria Derbyshire with Naga Munchetty or Victoria Derbyshire with Joanna Gosling which is just plain bizarre. With Andrew Marr's show his absences are unplanned and rare, even when planning this programme it was established she wouldn't present it everyday ergo it was stupid to name it after her. Though as ever I maintain that isn't the worst decision they made when planning the show.

That is true too and Marr has had also his health problems to deal with and is continuing to deal with.

Victoria Derbyshire is a naff name for the show to begin with, it's just an attempt to turn the Margo Leadbetter clone into a "news brand" but she isn't. She is Mrs Daily Mail.

On the last two pages, this thread has cast doubt on her professionalism and now seems to have started taking issue with her appearance. Regardless of the merits of the programme, I don't think some of these comments are very relevant, or very nice.

Not really. Her 'manner' is very Margo Leadbetter-esque, she has no sense of humour and seems to seek tragedy in a chocolate factory fairly constantly. The programme is dull with or without her presenting.

I don't always watch it but when I do it's either a hit or miss with keeping my attention. Not a fan of the Newsbeat integration...just doesn't feel serious enough. The theme tune is one of the worst of BBC News.

What's silly is how they do the out of studio shows right in such a space where passing members of the public can essentially shout across (this has happened a few times now).

Agree with the name of the show. Should drop the full name and go for something like Victoria LIVE.

I don't see much humour, but I do see plenty of tragedy, in the reports of Frank Gardner, Jeremy Bowen and others.

How much scope for "a sense of humour" in there in a news programme? I presume you know her both on and off camera to make a sweeping statement such as that.

Although her name is on the programme, she is not personally responsible for all the items that are covered. If the programme majors on bad news, that is the decision of the entire production team. And news is generally bad, that's why it's news.

It's the same issue that was quite rightly levelled at her Five Live programme. It was unrelenting with negative stories.

I listen a lot to Sean O'Rorke on RTE Radio One, who was (and still is) the Irish timeslot equivalent.
Yes, he tackles the issues of the day, and focuses on social issues - but there are also much lighter stories (as if to let the listeners to come up for air) and allow some laughter and good humour. Its called balance.

It was largely ignored on Five Live, and from the programmes I've seen, imported into BBC Two.

You need that in a mid-morning programme.

The VD programme still really doesn't have an identity, too newsy for BBC Two, yet not newsy enough for the News Channel.

This Morning may be gutter tabloid television, yet it has a focus on being a mid-morning lifestyle daytime show with an element of topical discussion. VD is restrained by the commitments to the News Channel service licence and doesn't serve either audience.
