Urrm the farthest south west point really should be Troy Town, New Lane, St Agnes, IOS. Which will add another 35 miles from Penzance to the equation.

Just as well you said that, I've not had my Great Yarmouth fix today either!

I'm quite impressed by what I've seen so far, it does seem like they're making the effort to cover the whole new region. Hopefully they can keep it up, it might even make for a better programme, as all regions struggle for stories at times.

The split stuff is interesting, I'm intrigued as to how exactly it's being done operationally, i.e. who is looking after region A's pre-record while region B is live and how the timing is done

Thanks for that Stuart, interesting to see the 2 versions and the differences too.

The galley and newsroom in Bristol look pretty new, anyone know is they were refitted especially for the new programme?

How many of you noticed the split-region segment in the middle of the sport section on The West Country Tonight 6pm programme on Monday? Smile

Was a a split version?? I did think there was lots about Argyle, Yeovil and Exeter

Would it not be easier for them to simply pre-record the whole programme for one region and just play it as live, switching between regions every few days?

I'd be interested to see that 'behind the scenes' report if anyone can upload it

I'll upload that bit shortly....in the meantime here (finally) is a decent quality upload of the 'Westcountry' version of the titles.

What's the point of that voiceover after the titles? I think we've already gathered what the programme is called and who is presenting it by that point!!

I watched both West and Westcountry versions last night, so for those that didnt get what was going on...

West had the pre-recorded 15mins at 6pm, so normal West Tonight title sequence and the back-drop was the usual Suspension Bridge, and usual presenters. So apart from a slightly different name, not much difference.

Westcountry had the live 15mins at 6pm because of the live report from Truro. Again normal Westcountry Live title sequence and usual Tamar Bridge background, but with unfamilar presenters in Lisa and Steve.

After the recap of the headlines the two regions joined together at 6.15pm with a now plain background. Sport (presented by Mark Tyler) was strange. It started as a pan-regional showing goals from Bristol City and Plymouth, but then split:

West had Bristol Rovers, Swindon and Cheltenham goals plus rugby highlights of Bath and Gloucester.

Westcountry had Exeter City goals plus rugby highlights of Exeter / Plymouth / Cornish Pirates.

Then there was a random 'Sport' sting (allowing to merge back together) and Mark then handed back to Lisa and Steve for a few other stories before the weather.

With the weather, only Westcountry has a sponsor at the moment, so West had an ITV Local sting to fill the time before crossing to Bob who was at the Met Office in Exeter. Map showed the whole new region at first, but then zoomed into each of the old regions.

And that was it from what I remember. Better than I thought it was going to be!

Again normal Westcountry Live title sequence

Actually, because 'Westcountry Live' wasn't broadcast in 16:9 they had to change the title sequence, as you will see if you compare these two videos.

I agree, it was better than I expected in terms of there not really being a visible join for the 'casual viewer'. Of course, now we know that the 'pseudo Vista Desktop' background means a merged part of the programme. Lisa also slipped up and commented "thanks for joining us" part way through after the end of the pre-recorded 'ITV West' segment. Confused

Why's that wrong?

BBC Look East do this frequently with the sports section just being linked to by the presenters generically - sports sting and then separate Norwich/Cambridge packages being played out followed by sports sting back to Norwich presenters. This is normally after the Close Up split earlier in the programme and unlike the earlier split it is not linked to as "sport where you are".
