Sky News removed a swishy noise from a live bug. Big deal. It's a tiny part of a graphic that still looks very nice and without the sound effect, makes it seem much less Fox News. Which really, is what Sky have spent the past year of tweaks and scheduling changes trying to do - less spectacular, more news.

And exactly this is the problem, but obviously only for me. I'd like to have back the old skynews. More spectacular, less news, or even better more spectacular more news.

The ratings for the past 18 to 24 months would suggest that most viewers take a different view.

In a way, yes. The reason why I started watching sky news a few years ago, was the great studio and the great orchestra music. Rolling Eyes

Well, you will be disappointed to know that the swishy noise FXs are gone. No technical fault, a decision by Sky to remove them..

What you're suggesting is that Sky News throw away their new viewers, and instead bring back things that will, in the end, lose more of it's credibility, and take it closer to a Fox News UK style affair...

Moving away from the terrible idea of turning Sky News into Fox UK...

On the Press Preview last night, George Galloway said that by the end of the year Sky would be under new ownership and Murdoch would no longer be the owner. Mark Longhurst quickly jumped in and said Murdoch only owned 49% of BSkyB. Whether or not that was a quick decision to stop Galloway from making it look as though Sky News was part of News Corp, it certainly showed that Sky News staff are not liking their link to Murdoch empire that some guests have been mentioning over the past year.
I remember during the NOTW closure, there were reports here that Sky News staff were angry about the connections to News Corp and morale was low during the buy-out attempt before that. It still seems as though Sky News is concerned about this story and they are not enjoying reporting it.

Just putting this out there, but maybe one of the reasons for the move towards being a "serious" news channel is because of the suggestions last year that Sky News was going to become the Fox News of the UK? When the green light was given before the phone-hacking scandal, articles like these emerged:

http://www.newstatesman.com/blogs/steven-baxter/2011/03/news-corp-sky-imagine-blogs
http://ftalphaville.ft.com/blog/2011/03/03/504031/sky-news-and-the-irregular-plurals/

Could it be that this move away from the spectacular news agenda was because of the BSkyB buyout and Sky News wanting to assert itself as not-Fox News?

No, that's not what I am suggesting.

I'm dissapointed by this decision, The toth isnt right without the swoosh transition from headlines to the studio, The Live and Breaking news swooshes I always found got my attention if I was doing something else with it on in the background and yes I do like the sound of them too

The quality of the news content is of course the most important thing but for someone like me who watches Sky News for many hours during the day and night the little presentational extras on Sky just make it that bit more engaging and nicer to watch, such examples being the the yellow ticker for breaking news, as soon as that flashes on screen it gets your attention, I can't say the same for the BBC News channels ticker, The voice of god also adds that extra something at the start of the hour even in its cut down form, The live and breaking news transitions also look nice but most importantly with the swoosh always got my attention, the moving backgrounds on the 2 way interviews all add that extra presentational element which makes it more interesting to watch for an extended period of time compared to the BBC's boring graphics, presentation and studio

I also think it was a bad decision to remove the proper into break sequences which again just made it that bit more interesting than just going black and into adverts

1 final thing even though they got rid of the island which I miss, Sky still have 7 different presentaion points which compared to the BBC's gives it much more variety, All the above things enhance my time watching Sky News , I don't find that any of these presentational things past or present distract me from the news itself either

What a wonderful opening shot on Sky News at two just there. The jib camera shot for the voiceover zoomed into Kay Burley with a newswall background and was used as the opening camera. Was just like the old Afternoon Live opening shots but at the desk. Was truly a magnificent opening. If anyone captured it its worth showing.

Sorry to ask again. Does anyone have a capture of this?
