Kay Burnley’s Sunrise!

I think you’re forgetting that Sky News operates in a parallel universe where ‘The News Hour with Mark Austin’ (which lasts for 2 or 3 hours) is their idea of a killer brand.

Yes, The News Hour is a strange name, as it is a 2 hour long programme!

I reckon calling Kay's show 'Sunrise' would be just as weird, considering the sun rises at approx. 6.30 and her programme is 7.00 until 10.00...

Also, hopefully they won't bring back the awful title that was 'The Sarah Jane Mee Show'.
The word 'Show' suggests that she's going to come out singing and dancing, and that it is more of an entertainment programme than a UK news bulletin! Very Americanised concept.

The Early Rundown seems like a waste of time. We go from a presenter on air for 6 hours overnight to a presenter on air for 1 hour. Would make sense if they stayed on as part of Kay’s show but they’re just on for the hour aren’t they?

Yes on air for one hour. Stupid idea to pay someone, (even though its a salary probably) to be on air for one hour.

Worth remembering they also ditch the long established Live at 5 brand as well, which along with Sunrise are the two brands you'd really associate with Sky News.

The person who presents that hour is also going to be doing two hours of preparation beforehand, and also at times stays on for 2+ hours as a standby presenter when other programmes are being done on an OS. And yes, on salary.

It’s not dissimilar to Sophy Ridge doing 1 hour on a Sunday, or Ian King and Adam Boulton doing 1 hour every weekday. Of course, they all do more than just presenting.

Well of course I know that more goes into any broadcast than simply reading the autocue but the question has to be asked if the Early Rundown is remarkably different than the preceding 5am hour or the 4am hour.

I think it does seem like a missed opportunity to not start the Early Rundown at 5am and be actually on air earlier than the other main breakfast shows. Have a proper fast paced running order.

Indeed. For me Sky News will always be ‘Live at 5 with Bob Friend and Lisa Aziz’. We first got Sky in 1997 and I absolutely loved Sky News at first.

Certainly from when I first got Sky in 1996 until 2005, Sky News was a classic example of fast paced rolling news with the likes of Bob Friend, Lisa Aziz, JT etc.

In 2005, Sky News revamped not just to widescreen, but editorially as well and it's never really recovered.

Presumably broadcasters think or know that there wouldn't be enough of an audience in the UK at 5am to make it worth their while producing a specially branded programme at that time.

As you say, surely The Early Rundown is a repeat of the overnight stories. They might as well just continue the overnight style of presentation for another hour until Kay begins at 7am.

BBC you could say in normal times begins it breakfast news programming on BBC One/News Channel with The Briefing at 5am as that aimed as a breakfast programme for Europe and Africa on BBC World News
