No the newsroom backdrop is real!
.

Maybe I am confused then; I though the newsroom backdrop was superimposed on to the window. Are you saying they do turn the shot around and what we see is not just a backdrop and the newsroom is really behind the presenters?

Please explain.

In short, yes. The studio is part of the newsroom, and when they stopped using the skyline view they simply turned the desk around and swapped the position of the cameras, and use the view into the newsroom instead.

Right and then for the other bulletins they turn back in front of the window for the desk anyway?

I just thought because it is not a completely clear view they had just superimposed the newsroom view on to the window.

Well at least I know now.

Question is; will anything happen tomorrow?

But it looked equally bad when it was light.

It was described as looking like the foyer of a Premier Inn. I just don't see the point in making it obvious that you're presenting from converted space on the 10th floor of an office block, with a pointless view as your backdrop.

It's not clever, it just comes across as being cheap, lazy and unimaginative.

The only time these sort of views work, are for temporary studios in specific locations - such as on College Green, at Wimbledon, or the excellent ones used for the Olympics/Paralympics.

Well that studio worked just fine for LNN for all those years.

Square Eyes posted this time-lapse shortly after the relaunch. The desk is on a lazy susan type set up. There's also a little background on the studio too. http://www.itv.com/news/granada/2013-03-25/itv-news-granada-reports-moves-to-new-home-at-mediacityuk/. It seems thought they added on some frosting to the newsroom glass since then however.

I note from that, that there were some green curtains for CSO moving about over the windows - I wonder if that was planned initially for the winter months?

Looks like a standard shared cyc-rail carrying black and green drapes. Suspect it runs full length so that they can black out the windows at times when they need to avoid direct sunlight hitting presenters, and can also have a green screen section for weather and/or pre-recorded CSO graphic pieces to camera? It gives you some flexibility at not very much cost.

I doubt it was planned to be a CSO backdrop for the main news - to do that effectively you'd need some camera tracking and live background rendering technology as well or you're limited to static shots. (Those two things are not cheap - and without them you end up with Mustard TV...)

It's worth noting they've got Andy Crane back presenting the Daybreak bulletins tomorrow.

Great view of the Imperial War Museum.

I don't know if anyone else has mentioned this but the weather/sport screen has awful screen burn with the Granada Reports logo.

Also, Granada Reports has been nominated for its third BAFTA.

It's been like that for ages, not very good considering they've only been in there for a little over a year, it's only noticable when they switch the screen to ITV News SPORT.

It may have been because I was watching in HD but I thought it was also very noticeable on the weather, particularly when there were bright backgrounds.

I would have mentioned that had Granada Reports mentioned it, which they obviously didn't! Smile Great news for both local news teams.
