I don’t think it will have much implications on the recent debate in terms of crew, Biden and Wallace. There seemed to be good social distancing in place. Perhaps if he was mic’d up by a crew member (can’t remember if he had a lav or not) or had makeup there might be a risk there.

The three of them were fairly distant on stage but Trump was shouting a lot, although he was facing more towards Wallace than Biden. The length of time the debate lasted for and the ventilation in the venue are both factors

It's certainly an intriguing situation, and I suspect the US media are scrabbling about trying to concoct contingency plans for any eventuality.

It's all unprecedented. I think it's too late to replace the names on the actual ballots, but if a candidate pulled out for whatever reason the RNC/DNC would have to nominate someone else. In terms of whose in charge, the current presidency/vice presidency ends at midday on 20th Jan no matter what. If the Trump is incapacitated before that then Pence is next in line, and if he can't (which isn't unlikely if he's caught Covid too) it's Nancy Pelosi who takes over, presumably until Jan 20th.

I suppose the main issue here is the impact on the election campaign, and the fact that there are two scheduled TV debates yet to take place. It would be difficult to hold them if one of the participants is via Zoom. (I really doubt they could go down the HIGNFY route of having a 'tub of lard' in place of an absent guest.)



In a previous election, Clint Eastwood debated an empty chair representing President Obama at the RNC. So nothing would surprise me at this point.

Relatively easy to change the nominee. The implications of doing so however... it's a car crash of state, Federal and Constitutional law. Have a read of this article for an explanation of mini-conventions, Electoral College mathematics and faithless electors...

The coverage has been terrible with some interviewers not grasping the concept of a Vice President and it all seeming to be from the point of view he's on his deathbed rather than the official line that he's tested positive with no significant symptoms.

BBC News seem to be with BBC World at the expense of covering important local news in relation to Coronavirus and more lockdown restrictions here.

There is little reason for media outlets to believe the "official line" regarding anything coming from the White House.

Whether or not they believe what is coming from the White House precedent is that health issues regarding serving heads of state (and other senior public officials) are downplayed as much as possible unless and until there is official confirmation as to the situation being serious even if it is plainly obvious that the official line is pure nonsense (such as the original lines regarding the crash that killed Diana).
