Surprised that the News Channel have stayed with Ben Brown rather than taking the Ten, despite both doing little other than cover the outcome of the Commons vote.

I know I criticised this a few days ago, but the new pushback is quite useful right now. Instead of Ben pulling out of the interview, the sidebar appeared to alert the viewers of the Breaking News. This new sidebar is very flexible and can show anything from quotes, tweets, maps, live feeds. Even the "more to follow" ellipsis animates.

This would be very useful if the NC is to go online only.

Was this used to recap the breaking news from America, or to actually break it - and if the latter, then did it animate on screen in a different way?

Well this is not doing any favors to Geeta's late morning shift. First the extended GMA took her final hour and now a NC presenter does her 10.00 cet bulletin. She's left with just 9 and 11.00 cet bulletins. From a 4 hour shift to this. I guess they managed to cut costs on her. Rolling Eyes

Why can't they just simulcast 15 minutes of World News with a WN presenter?

Exactly! My suggestion for the morning schedule on the NC would solve this problem and give her an extra hour!

That fading drop shadow on the push back boxes, let's the whole thing down visually for me. It's very lazy.

BBC Sport and regional news programmes were using that style when bordering still photos on screen 20-25 years ago.

That was cutting edge back then. This just looks complacent and cobbled together in 3 minutes these days.

How is the push back handled - is it done by the switcher err vision mixer or is the video feed pushed through the Viz Engine?

Edit : Watched the transition slowly and realized that as the video feed is pushed back the white side panel with the BBC News logo was already in place. So I guess the push back could be easily done by keying the video on top of graphic.

I wonder why they don't get Annita to present a 15 minute bulletin from the desk side of the Victoria Derbyshire studio - which is staffed - this seems like an odd arrangement which is just about acceptable during the overnight hours but not really in the middle of the day. This way, both UK and (some) World viewers lose out by receiving a sub-par service.

This would seriously impact on the ability of the Derbyshire team to rehearse and set up though. It makes complete sense to simulcast this bulletin with World News, while doing it from a studio setting up for a very complex and fluid programme just to preserve a 14 minute bulletin on the news channel is far from ideal. In many ways, the 0900 bulletin on World was often very simple, now it's got more resources and production going into it. It may have a more uk based agenda, but on days like today where the storytelling benefits from lots of live DTLs it means World viewers get a better programme than the might have done before.

I agree it makes sence Simulcasting with World (infact it is what i predicted would happen when the timings of Biz Live and Derbyshire were announced). However why the World News presenter cannot present the Simulcast is a bit odd. Surely it would save more money if there was no dedicated news channel presenter until 11:00. In the case of Breaking News they would already Simulcast with World and if there is breaking UK news there is no reason why the Victoria Derbyshire presenter can't handle it?

There are dull behind the scenes reasons to do with editorial staff shift times which means that it makes sense for the uk news team to produce the 0900 bulletin and make it World friendly. It's all designed to streamline operations and reduce duplication.

The output of one of the streams from the gallery (there are 4) is fed into a small DVE and controlled by the director. This DVE's the output over a Full Frame Viz engine that is run by a dedicated producer at the back of the gallery.

The lower third engine then adds the straps over this output as normal.

Does the fact that a dedicated producer is required mean that this can only be used at certain times?

Has Mike Bushell presented the late sports shift on the NC before?

If the BBC are trying to save money, surely sharing the weather bulletin in the 10 would make sense? Otherwise the presenter has to do a NC forecast then a BBC One forecast. If they are trying to save money, surely using the crew in the studio is a better use of resources?

The weather studios are self operated, so no particular hardship to pre-record a BBC One forecast and do the NC one live/record both.

I think there was also some benefit to separating the weather from the Ten for the nations opts, they can drop the weather if need be.
