Extracts from BBC News Channel Remit

Section 1
Quote:
BBC News Channel should deliver up-to-the-minute, accurate, impartial and independent news, analysis and insight. It should provide fast and comprehensive coverage of local, UK and international events as they unfold and specialist analysis to put the news in context.

Section 4
Quote:
It should offer a comprehensive news service each hour, including sport, and clear,
comprehensive weather updates from across the UK. There should be a news summary on the half hour.

BBC News Channel should aim to deliver breaking news first and, wherever possible, immediately but not to the detriment of accuracy. In the event of significant breaking news, BBC News Channel may also be
broadcast on BBC One or BBC Two.

It should offer a service of regular updates on breaking stories and there should be significant live coverage

Annex 1: Performance measurement framework
Quote:
The framework uses a range of metrics based around the four drivers of public value:
Arrow Quality
Arrow Reach
Arrow Impact
Arrow Value for money.

The previous slot was higher quality (especially reports which didn't look like a piece of work by a GCSE student who's gone over board when asked to use some of the filters), had an equal or higher reach (depending on which report), had greater impact (it has been suggested some governmental departments have switched over to Sky) and was cheaper to put out.

Personally I think it's good the BBC is embracing new media on traditional forms as the world is evolving, the BBC should try to keep up. I personally don't agree with the cuts they are facing but certainly think moving with the times will make it better and hopefully more open in the long run.

If it were a normal edition of Victoria Derbyshire, then I'm sure they would have. But you've got to see it from an editor/producers perspective - they have all of the Labour leader candidates, all the audience, all the staff and equipment at that location, so they can't really scrap it.

I guess the alternative could have been to run it on 5Live as is and show it as a pre-rec later on this evening on the Channel, but still it defeats the object.

I really don't see though why the BBC should be arranging debates on behalf of the Labour (or any other) party. They've done a couple (at least) now - it's one thing them broadcasting a Labour arranged hustings (that's the sort of live news event you'd expect the news channel to break into), but these debates aren't what the BBC is for IMO.

Once again though the scheduling has been a major problem - 8.30-11am often sets the news agenda for the day, and the BBC just isn't involved in that at the moment.

Is there a generic National News thread anywhere? Can't find one...

Either way, I wonder why the promo for the 10 that goes out at 9pm/9.30pm on BBC One is still being recorded in A. The studio isn't used for anything else, so surely they're wasting the staff there for the sake of 30 minutes?

As the usual NC/National studio isn't in use after 8.30pm now, I don't get why they don't just use that!

Believe you me there is no 'wasting of staff for the sake of 30 minutes' or anything else at that time. BBC1 want it by 2030 - so its done DIRECTLY after the 8pm summary with the grand total of 3 members of staff. Hardly wasting staff.

Okie doke, thanks for the explanation. I didn't realise the 8pm summary was also broadcast from A.

I guess that does beg a question of why the Ten presenter can't do the 8pm summary - although I get that the whole point of the 8 is to reach audiences who are turned off by mainstream news coverage, so there is an argument not to make it look like a trail for the Ten.

Just as a thought, perhaps they could have put World News up on the Red Button?

Putting it on the News Channel, with a ticker pointing to BBC Two for Victoria could had been done by BBC News at NBH themselves. Red Button would take quite a bit more organising.

I assume that the Six O'Clock News trail is also recorded in advance, and often comes from Studio C. Of course the problem with recording it over an hour in advance is the news can change. I've seen ends of Pointless where they've trailed one lead story only to have a new, hitherto unmentioned, lead story in the actual bulletin.

Off work at the minute so I'm able to watch the Victoria Derbyshire programme for the first time really. The only redeeming feature I can see so far is Ben Thompson's biceps!

I'm not against Victoria's show in anyway, but it's a shame to see the NC reduced to this. Surely the morning hours of one of the most important parts of the day for rolling news, and it can't do any good for the brand.

I can't stand the casual wear on the journalists who go on VD. An hour later Ben is suited and booted back on the NC catwalk.
