I am not looking forward to this, for the reason that I really loath Victoria Derbyshire. I am sure that she is a lovely person in real life, but I really cannot stand watching her when she is on tv. In the past when the News Channel have done simulcasts with Five Live radio shows and Victoria is on, I have to turn the volume down, put on a DVD or change to Sky News. There is something about her that just grates in my head.

Personally though, I would love to see someone like Simon McCoy presenting a show like this. It would give him a chance to use his wonderful personality on screen, instead of sticking to the stoic BBC non emoitional facade that is normally required by news readers. Simon would have fun with the public and would make the programme entertaining. Victoria just doesn't come across that way to me.

I think all these changes that the BBC are introducing are the thin end of the wedge now and before long the news channel will be another media channel with just a few minutes of news every hour (Think radio with hourly news updates). I can see "Britains most watched news channel" becoming "Britains least watched news channel" as viewers will defect to Sky.

We already know that Carol Kirkwood will be doing weather for VD in addition to Breakfast. Sport will be interesting though to see if they can squeeze that in among the female skewed topics.

Is that actually part of the programme's stated remit? Makes it sound like a posh Loose Women (shudder).

Most will come back once they've seen Kay Burley.

Well here's what she said to the Radio Times:

Quote:
The show, called simply Victoria Derbyshire, is a daytime news and current affairs programme, and in the first month its focus will be on the general election. One aim is to attract a younger audience to current affairs, especially women. “If you ask [young people] whether they are engaged by politics, they’ll probably say, ‘Ooh, no’. But ask them whether they’re interested in local schools and hospital, and they’ll say, ‘Yeah’.”

Watching the start of the 11pm bulletin and the News Channel didn't make any concessions to the fact they were also on BBC1 Wales with mention of the sport at 1115 and the papers at 1130

The BBC News channel broke away from Breakfast this morning at 07:35 to join a Liberal Democrat debate and rejoined Breakfast at 08:00

It's notable how far the news channel has fallen in 10 years, remember when the ITV News Channel was on and there was outrage when they'd simulcast the ITV1 bulletins, cutting off a press conference mid flow.

Now how many hours of the news channel actually are proper UK focused rolling news?

It's a good example of why the BBC need strong competition and not to dominate the market too much.

Sky News is still as strong as ever. I don't get why you've bought ITV NC into it, nobody outside of TV forum remembers it or watched it.
In fact it's closest competition was FOX News http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/media/news/a26319/fox-news-beating-itv-news-in-uk.html

The difference between now and 10 years ago is that the overall audience for both it and Sky news haven't grown much in 10 years. 10 years ago everyone thought they would continue to grow rapidly and traditional bulletins would be obsolete. It never happened which is why even the existence of rolling news channels are being questioned.

It certainly has nothing to do with a channel that even their own bosses didn't take seriously.

I always thought BBC News music would be great for clubbing. Very Happy

Didn't Newsbeat use a version of the David Lowe news theme that was more clubby at one time?

No I don't think so, Newsbeat beds and idents are produced internally within the Radio 1 and 1xtra audio teams.

The latest beds are produced by Dan Mumford.

Martin Lambie-Nairn and David Lowe must be so proud. Wink
