This presumably counts as an extremely exceptional, dare I say unprecedented circumstance, so dropping GMB is definitely the right thing to do. This is also a rare, if again first, occasion where individual regions have been allowed to drop a network news programme.

Sadly, I don't have Sky... Is there a way to watch the STV programmes online?

They dropped the geoblock on STV Player for the first debate; their servers promptly collapsed under the strain. I think the second debate was carried live on ITN's YouTube channel, so perhaps they'll do the same again.

Hopefully ITV PLC and STV will allow the STV show to be broadcast in the Border Scotland area though.

I wonder if that was part of the arrangement for allowing STV to opt out of GMB.

I'd be interested to know how the ad revenues will work during STV's Breakfast opt, I can't see STV going to the effort of putting on a programme if ITV are getting all the revenue, nor can I see ITV allow the opt if it means a drop in their revenue.

Well it is still ITV's airtime, so it could be ITV commissioning STV to provide a show for the slot (does it take the Lorraine slot too?)

Getting a bit scary now the polls seem to be swinging in favour of independence - as I said last week after the poorly moderated BBC debate these election/referendum debates can have serious consequences if not done absolutely fairly - and that debate seemed to ignore most of the common rules set up for the previous election debates and the established norm for the US presidential debates.

In some ways it is more significant than that - as STV are being allowed to broadcast outside of their franchise/license hours, and occupy Channel 3 when ITV Breakfast (formerly GMTV/TVam) have the right to broadcast.

This has happened nationally in the past, when ITV had the rights to Formula One and broadcast races during GMTV's licence period, and in return ITV gave GMTV airtime outside their normal broadcast hours ISTR. I guess it is possible that ITV plc (who own ITV Breakfast) and STV have reached a similar agreement?

From memory I'm not sure ITN's ITV election coverage had commercials. If that is the case then ITV and STV may have come to the conclusion that if STV aren't making any money from the slot, it is a public service to allow them access to Channel 3 on this occasion? Will win Ofcom brownie points I'm sure.

Wouldn't they have had to get permission from Ofcom to do this in the first place? The bottom line however is it's such a big, planned, story and the result is now literally too close to call that common sense dictates a preemption is acceptable. And like someone else said, the chances are they'll be no adverts - election coverage on ITV in the past has, indeed, been commercial free.

Very good point. A lot of commentators said at the time that the 2010 debates contributed heavily to giving us the Coalition Government, because Nick Clegg was effectively able to go on, knowing he had no chance of winning outright, and say what people wanted to hear. The public were confused to such an extent that many people who would have probably voted Conservative or Labour voted for the Lib Dems, unsurprisingly they nailed the student vote.

A post more appropriate for Metropol, but an illustration of the impact TV debating can have.

According to Radio Times Online, Good Morning Britain is extended until 10am on 19 September, immediately followed by This Morning. STV's coverage is also running through until 10am.

On BBC One Scotland, the overnight programme is planned to run through to 9.15am. Then there's a 'Reporting Scotland Referendum Special' from 9.15am-1.00pm and 1.30pm-5.15pm.

EDIT: Incidentally . . . the 6.30pm Reporting Scotland is extended to an hour from tomorrow evening. The One Show is getting a late-evening airing on BBC One Scotland.

Means STV can continue without having to lose an episode of Jeremy Kyle I guess.

I imagine This Morning may also go on STV within time, although generally with Scottish elections STV preempt one of the afternoon programmes instead.

Should point out there have been a number of precedents nationally.

Princess Diana funeral - opt to ITN at 8:30am
Football & Rugby World Cups 2002/3 where the time difference caused breakfast time kick offs.
Royal Wedding 2011 - opt to ITN at 8:30am
