Why do the cameras need to be in different positions for each opening? Why can't there be a camera looking at the screens and a camera looking at the desk as part of both templates? Surely the only difference between the templates should be which camera is selected to start with. With that set up, if they select the wrong template then they just need to switch to the other camera rather than the messy situation now where they have to switch to the other camera and position it. It wouldn't stop mistakes happening but it would make them quicker to resolve.
i think the system they are using is a groundbreaking one and for the majority of the time it never fails and the catwalk sequence on BBC News is very good indeed, certainly better then BBC World's equivalent, perhaps they should limit only to nationals and important events which i think is what they should do, but the bbc must and will persist its a great system, sure when it fails, it fails bad, but its reasonably rare.
They did handle it much better this time, not cutting to the camera moving in on the desk, apart from very briefly, and otherwise just leaving it on that wide shot. They didn't cue the presenter until he had a camera on him either, so it continued much quicker and was less noticeable.
I *think* the coffee table BBC News are using at the games is actually recycled from a BBC Sport Scotland programme, but with a BBC News band instead? Possibly Sportscene? I'm sure I've seen it used before, despite the fact it is hilariously ugly.
With the 11pm BBC One bulletin delayed, it seems the News Channel has joined the Commonwealth Games opening ceremony rather than doing a regular bulletin.
