Question :

Is CNNI an inernational news channel appealing to a global audience, or is it a channel for a US audience to watch when they are abroad?

It used to feel a bit like it was the former, it now very much feels like the latter. Maybe that's where they are trying to position it?

I agree that it has changed significantly - and feels a much more US-centric channel.

But then in previous years it was always a bit of an anomaly - a good quality American-run news channel...

Interesting that a lot of decent anchors jumped ship to Al Jazeera English - which is fulfilling a similar role to the one CNNI used to?

Advert breaks are far too regular, especially considering how few actually commercials they air. Presumably they're just following the American ad break format but I can't imagine there's any part of the world that is able to fill all these breaks with a reasonable number of ads. Cutting them down might help me stop flicking over to Al Jazeera.

From what I've been told, EU regulations (or is it just Ofcom?) only allow two ad breaks every half hour during news. Since the US standard is to have three breaks, CNNI does that, but they run nothing but promos for their own shows during at least one of them on the EMEA feed so that they're still complaint, as they're technically not selling advertising during the break (at least in Europe— they may be selling ads elsewhere in the world). This is also partly why they've been known to air single promos lasting two minutes from time to time since the 2009 rebrand.

It's absolutely silly, and it would be much better programming if they ran more Highlight features or ran a breakfiller like BBC World.

It definitely does not air the same amount of ad breaks as CNN US. When they simulcast domestic it feels like they had a break every 3 minutes or so in the second half of the hour. It's totally ridiculous and makes watching a torture. CNNI has 2 breaks in each half of a hour, I think.

You're right, especially about CNN Newsroom. Newsroom typically goes straight for 20 minutes at the top of the hour, then the rest of the hour is filled with just a few hits then more ad breaks.

But if they did it typically, in 30 minutes in US television, there are 8 minutes of ads, and most outlets (national news, local news, and CNN before they went crazy) separate those 8 minutes into 3 ad breaks. That's a big generalization, but the amount of ad time doesn't usually fluctuate that much.

Really enjoy Fareed's show and he is clearly an intelligent guy, but there really is no excuse for this - did he really think no one would notice?

Some better news for CNN? Or rather, some better news FROM CNN. Candy Crowley is to moderate one of the upcoming Presidential Debates. First time a woman's done it in twenty years, apparently.

New York Post (not always the most reliable) says that CNN U.S is keen to develop reality shows and plans to launch a panel show in the 11pm ET slot.

CNN Newroom (daytime news bulletins on CNN US) has a new look and it's truly horrendous. The sound effects overload during that opening and cartoonish nature of it are just too much, even for American news.

At the end of the clip, there seems to be no politics on the bottom ticker bar, even though it goes to that section
