BSkyB kicks-off major re-brand

BSkyB has unveiled the first stage of a major rebrand of its UK service which will see the Sky logo as well as a number of channel identities change, writes Barbara Marshall.

Sky News will be rebranded first and sport a new logo and on-air graphics from 1 October. Changes have already been made to the studio look and presenter line-up. Sky 1 and the movie channels will change in the new year, although it has not yet been decided whether Sky Sports will be rebranded.

Director of broadcasting and production Mark Sharman, who has led the rebranding exercise over the last six months, has brought in former Sky creative director and on-air branding specialist Bruce Dunlop to act as consultant. Sharman said Dunlop had been advising on operational issues but the rebranding had been done in-house.

Dunlop said the aim was to get back to a central brand while ensuring each channel retained its own character: 'Either you make idents so good you don't get bored or you make them flexible, like the BBC 2 idents.'

A Sky spokesman said: 'One of the main objectives is to refresh the on-screen look of the Sky channels. The aim is to give some unity to the look and build upon the obvious power of the Sky brand.'

The planning and presentation functions for each channel are expected to be brought back under the control of one person to ensure synergy across the channels.

And now stage 2 approaches...   This is how the lineup looks at present

Hmmmm, not too sure I like the sound of that, I really like the current Sky Premier look! I'll be glad to see the back of Moviemax's idents though!

I'm surprised though, the Sky Customer Channel is usually the first to change! Are we on course for a 7th Jan across-the-board change?

Here is a diagram of how it works!

The Sky Travel logo simply doesn't look right, I think that the uppercase letters of SKY should be the same height as the smaller lower case ones, like in the [SKY(news] logo, with the top of the t and l of travel sticking out. Oh, I know what I mean. Also, does that mean that Sky will have 2 logos, ie sky and SKY? That seems a little odd to say the least!

before this 2002 re-launch   they had 2 logos one for channels, one for corpoarte branding.

However with this re-launching the channel's logos all use the corporate sky font, but each logo will still have a logo tweaked so all logos have some differences to suit the channel.

so everything uses the same font, but channels and services are still seperated...

The SKY new look, like on sky travel and news at the moment.
Nice to see they are trying to bring back the unity of their channels.

Only SKY | one is being rebranded 7th Jan, the rest is happening later in the year!

I reckon we could see the end of Sky Premier and Sky Movie max..the whole lot could just become Sky Movies 1,2 etc..and Sky Cinema could become Sky Movies Gold.

I like the sound of the complete rebrand, I've hated the presentation on most of Sky's Channels since the launch of digital. Seeing as Sky Sport's current presentation is the only style of presentation I like then I won't mind if they leave Sky Sports:)
