I do wish though they had stuck with the 4 box motif - that worked rather well IMO and was a simply but effective logo which didn't require the brand to be explicitly written out in text as part of the logo. That said though I'm not quite sure where they could have gone with it.

Do you mean this?

Well more the 4 boxes that were part of that look (and the one before hand) and could appear on screen or as part of say the ITV News brand without the formed logo appearing - and you pretty much knew it was ITV1.

Although simple and cheap as chips I quite liked the regional variants used ever so briefly which just had the 4 boxes in landscape scenes - they could perhaps have played on that to get a new ident set.

Those were just in Central and Westcountry - made by Soda Design in Brum and overseen by ITV Central.

Just found a video for those not familiar:

I never liked them.

If the ITV logos change does this mean another news rebranding?

Errr, yes. A change of logo at least, anyway.

Brekkie is just referring to the device of three blue boxes and one yellow which were used in logo form ups and break flashes.

See I still like the 1989 one, a lot will argue it's dated but I think it's a better designed logo than the 1998 & 2006 versions, when does the middle right one date from never seen that before?

Didn't HTV use to have a logo something very similar to that presented in the middle of the montage?

Agreed entirely. Although I surprise myself that, purely on aesthetics, I find it to be more pleasing than what we have now - I don't know if it is proportions or spacing, along those lines, but there's something about the current logo when compared in this way, that comparatively just doesn't look quite as nice...

'81 springs to mind as the tail-end of that style? I don't know the actual timeframe, certainly not when it was introduced...!

I might as well just copy your post Johnny because I'm a fan of the 1989 logo too (I grew up with it - perhaps your username might indicate you were born the same year as me!) - and have never seen that middle one before either.

Yep, I remember both Thames & LWT using it, Thames kept the break bumper until they went off air IIRC & LWT used the break bumper until 1996, again IIRC. I still remember the jingle, the logo form up, et all from back then & to me it's still the best logo & the ident package itself, just a shame so few took it up.

Quite right, for some reason I skipped that second paragraph.

Where else can the ITV logo go from here though? If modern branding is anything to go by, they'll probably drop the box around it and just have 'itv' written in a sans-serif font.

That logo was always ghastly, as was their 'three blue squares and a yellow one' branding device. What was that even supposed to achieve? Why slap four boxes on a trailer and leave the audience to work out it means ITV1, when 'four squares' is hardly a unique enough concept to ever build any sort of audience connection with it.

Looking at those logos on the previous page, ITV aren't exactly great at choosing timeless logos are they. I think the currently one is perhaps bland enough not to get dated too quickly, if they update the channel logos.
