I think she did very well tonight. she looked a bit nervous but at the end seemed more relaxed, it's nice to hace a change sometimes. Has Annabell been off all week?

Hi guys. A bit of a lurker for years here and so this is my first post.

aconnell, you seem to really have it in for Dianne after reading your last couple of contributions. I don't think there was ever any doubt that Eno was going to be brought in to do the weather this evening. Ranvir doesn't read the weather when she reads the news (and theoretically she could) so why would Dianne. From a cost perspective, this isn't overtime in a factory, I assume that they are all salaried and contracted so would it have cost anymore?

I don't have it in for Diane; I just think she comes across as rather arrogant, and this gig tonight is clearly what she has wanted for years now. Perhaps you should look at your post count before you start to criticise. Firstly, Ranvir isn't a meteorologist (obviously!) and so won't do the weather. Don't be ridiculous. I'm against having two presenters anyway. I understand in rolling news, but for a rehearsed, well produced show, there really is no need. Gordon could have presented alone for one night, and Diane could have done the weather. Watch the news at lunchtime with Gordon & Heather, and it's perfectly adequate having one presenter and one weather presenter.

As for her peformance this evening. I thought she was pretty good, she is familiar to viewers and well liked on the face of things. Technically she's not a trained journalist so I am led to believe but she did a good job this evening and one has to wonder that when there is a journalist present, whether there is a steadfast need for the co-presenter to be aswell, particularly on a regional news programme.

She is familiar, I agree, and seems to be well liked from the number of times she was mentioned during her absence. I am a purist in that to present a news programme, you have to be a journalist. Simple. It's a skilled job, like any other, so why should she get tonight's job not being a journalist, when others have spent a year gaining a journalist diploma, had years of experience as a journalist, for her to study Meteorology and read the news, with no adequate qualifications?

Anyone get the impression that Dianne is being lined up as a long term Ranvir substitute or even replacement?

I really do doubt that. She would only ever suit short-term relief, and that's it. They wouldn't get away with her not being a journalist. Don't forget that they also compile scripts and may produce some of the programme, and she probably won't want/can't do this. I think it says a lot when after being with the station so long, it is only now that she presents the main evening bulletin. That says something surely?

It was merely on observation that your last 2 or 3 posts on this board just sounded like you had quite a dislike of Dianne. I wasn't wrong was I? And I certainly don't want to rock the boat being new, but my post count is not linked with my right to an opinion.

My point regarding Ranvir was that, in the context of what you were suggesting, she could do the weather as there are countless examples past and present of non-meteorologists doing the weather.

Gordon doing the news on his own may well have been an option but clearly the format of NWT now is double headed. Whether us as individuals prefer or dislike this is something of personal preference. My point is though is that last night (and Tonight) we have a team who are being paid regardless. They won't be paid by the hour and so the show is merely making use of personnel who are already being paid.......so why not use them?

The use of journalists is something which I am open minded on and I accept your personal opinion. I think as a co-presenter it's not absolutely vital that he/she is a trained journalist on a regional programme. Indeed, even as a purist, do you accept that in the past (admittedly when I was a wee nipper) that there were examples of non-journalists reading the news right across the networks?

What relevance does his post count have on his right to express an opinion?

They're moving in October, after Gordon leaves.

I have no problem with Diane reading the news, she's done it in the past. IIRC I've seen screencaps from the late 90's branding with her in the studio solo.

I do however think that since the BBC's policy is that newsreaders should be qualified journalists (remember the Moira Stewart scandal) then maybe Diane should only be allowed to read the news if she accompanied by a qualified journalist eg. Gordon, or Tony Livesey. although allowing her to read the news at all is somewhat hypocritical.

Whilst there is no way of knowing how long Ranvir will remain at NWT, I really cant see Diane replacing her on anything other than a few episodes here and there when they are really short staffed.

Shocked Bulletins.....

I didn't realise they were moving that soon. When is Breakfast moving then? I was expecting the two to share a studio (and hoping that they weren't going to be stuck in that corner the original plans suggested).

Whilst I hope some form of relaunch happens (I expect an internal new version of the current titles), I hope firstly they don't do what many regions did when they moved premises and create cheap titles showing pictures of their new building (Look East from 2004 for example), and secondly they don't use that horrible music currently used on Midlands Today.

I quite like the South East Today/Midlands Today music but it can be a bit jarring if you're not expecting an opt, NWT use it at Christmas.

I think only 1 (or 2) regions created new titles showing their new building; it must be said those Look East titles look particularly rubbish.

I can see some new shots being tucked into the existing HD title template, maybe not radically different titles. I don't see why because they move building they should be exempt from the regions branding 'rules', it will just make things look untidy in my opinion, that said, who can see another region to compare the two?

Yeh, late November they move. Does anyone know for certain what the plan is for Breakfast and North West Tonight sharing? Is this confirmed?

They'll be sharing the same studio.

There'll be different arrangements for NWT at Breakfast.
