Suppose the Daily Mirror will have to find a new guest contributor now?

...many posts about Skype...

Thank you, interesting. Perhaps then they should add a disclaimer, such as 'Alternative IP based communication systems are available'. We seem to have (thankfully) moved on from the paranoia of Blue Peter reffering to Selotape as stcky tape, and the BBC changing the title of Top Cat, and swung a bit too far the other way IMHO.

Perhaps it was too late this time around, but I wouldn't think it would take much effort for the Beeb to knock up a bit of Flash to stream video to and fro without relying on Skype. I found it a bit jarring to hear a brand name so often during rolling news.

Don't remember seeing that, though...

Maybe it's there, but gets obscured by the lower third?

There's a bit more too it than that - as Skype has some quite clever stuff under the hood.

However I think quite a few broadcasters are looking at Flash-based or similar bespoke apps that viewers can download and use instead of proprietary apps that have less-than-ideal terms of service.

The advantage of Skype is that many people have it installed & working and are familiar with its use as they use it as part of their day-to-day life - particularly ex-pats.

Did anyone catch that low-key, flat and somewhat "depressed" headline bed that just played under Tim Willcox and Peter Dobbie a few moments ago? Very sombre indeed, and had a very "slight" oriental feel to it. However, it was followed by the normal opening theme music after the intro headlines from both Tokyo and London were read out.

I have never heard that bed before.

The 1500 News Channel TOTH had the regular bed, but it made it on air briefly at 1600 - only for Tim's bit, then back to normal for the headlines from N6. (I'll try to get a clip online, but don't hold your breath)

Nothing to get excited about... the bed used was the one from 'The Hub'.

Interestingly, The Hub was on air on BBC World at the time, who used the same into as the News Channel but the bed carried on with Nik Gowing carrying on after the News Channel had opted out to do the rest of their headlines.

Think it was a simulcast, but just for the stuff from Tokyo with Tim both joining him at the same time on both channels.

I didn't recognise it as The Hub bed at all, and the bulletin I was referring to was the one which aired one hour prior to The Hub, presented on BBC World by Tim (Tokyo) and Peter Dobbie (Lon). I'm almost sure it wasn't The Hub's.

The Hub, (aired at 4pm London) was presented by Tim (Tokyo) and Nik Gowing (London), and the conventional Hub bed was used as normal. The preceding bulletin definitely had a different one.

I think I may have seen the same bizarre top-of-the-hour introduction, and in fact had it recorded on my PVR:

A very strange headline bed.

Very odd. Never heard that bed before. Is it even part of the BBC News set of themes?

It seems like it's one of the beds used for the US election coverage a few years ago.

Wow, that really doesn't work at all.

They used that headline bed during the US elections in 2008.
