Must say, I would say that we've all been surprised with the rebrand for all of the channels. We weren't exepecting something nice from Channel 5, but got some nice idents, and the same goes for the modified idents on 5* and 5USA. Glad they kept the FIVER and FIVEUSA stuff, and had it edited nicely, to make it look like it wasn't dropped in.
EDIT: Brief look at 5USA is online now too. http://bit.ly/fxfzyd There would be video accompanying 5* too, but YouTube has automatically blocked it in the UK and the Channel Islands.
EDIT 2: Filled in a dispute form, and the video is available for viewing in the UK and Channel Islands too for Educational purposes.

5* is a bit of a hatchet job really - some things they get away with, but most of it looks pretty awful IMO - and more notably, sounds awful. Getting music in on the cheap from viewers is doing the channel no favours at all.
Looking at these in terms of making the best of what you've got, it's a fair attempt at re-editing a logo in - a logo which I'm not sure about, however. It's far from ideal and, as essentially an overlay lacking the same functionality, is literally a bit flat. It's a shame - had they been able to effectively render the logo in a similar manner as the Fiver block with enough time spent on the motion, it could have worked more favourably. But if your logo isn't great to start with, no amount of skilled compositing is really going to change that.
I agree, the new 5usa idents aren't brilliant (they're not direct logo replacements as I thought before, they're new versions using footage from the other presentational elements with the logo stuck on).
Also, a version of the Channel 5 ECP advertising 5*. I haven't seen the old style menus (what's coming up on Fiver & Five USA as it was) since 5* launched.:
